San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - After the San Angelo Colts played catch-up the previous two games against the Alexandria Aces, it was Alexandria (6-6) who came from behind on Sunday night to win the series finale 10-5, taking the series two games to one. San Angelo (6-6) posted a 3-3 mark in its first homestand of the year, despite averaging over 10 runs per game in the six home games.
Trailing 5-3, the Aces batted around in the seventh off three different Colts pitchers and scored five runs, four of which were unearned because of a two-out error by John Beal. San Angelo starter Frank James, a southpaw, left the game in the inning with runners on second and third and two out, so right-hander Taylor Fleming could face Bryan Sabatella, a right-handed batter. During the at-bat, Fleming threw a wild pitch, making it a 5-4 game. Sabatella then hit a grounder to shortstop that went under Beal's glove as he tried to backhand it, tying the score at 5-5. Patrick O'Sullivan, who hit a home run in each game of the series and drove in 12 runs total in the three games, then crushed a two-run shot to left, giving the Aces a 7-5 edge. Fleming then gave way to Justin Robinson, who surrendered a solo homer to Madison Edwards as the Aces went back-to-back off two different Colts pitchers. Edwards's second dinger of the series made it 8-5.
Sabatella gave the Aces a four-run lead with an RBI single in the eighth and Palmer Karr hit an RBI double in the ninth to make it 10-5. Fleming (2-1) took the loss, allowing two unearned runs without retiring either of the two batters he faced. Alexis Sosa (1-1) picked up his first win of the year, lasting eight innings and giving up five runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Felipe Garcia threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the third road win for Alexandria.
For the third time in the series, the Aces struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third on the second homer of the series by Karr. San Angelo drew even when Bryan Frichter hit his league-leading 13th double of the season in the third to plate Beal, who had three hits including a triple.
The Colts went ahead 4-1 with three runs in the fourth, one of them coming on an RBI single by Beal and the other two on a two-run double by Tyrone Pendergrass. Alexandria cut the lead to 4-3 when Albert Gonzalez brought home two runs with a single in the fifth off James, who threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits. The Colts got one of those runs right back in the sixth and took a 5-3 advantage when John Anderson singled home Adam Miller.
After a league-wide off day on Monday, the Colts head to Amarillo to play a three-game series against the Dillas from Tuesday through Thursday. The Colts return to Foster Field on Friday for a three-game weekend set against the Aces. The series opener at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, May 30, features a Visor giveaway, sponsored by Budget Blinds.
