Broncos Bats Can't Save Their Pitchers in Loss to Harlingen
Harlingen, TX-The Laredo Broncos fell short of their attempt to sweep Harlingen as they lost by a score of 12-6 at Harlingen Field on Sunday Night . The Broncos have Monday off but hit the road for their final 3 games of the 9 game trip against the Alexandria Aces on Tuesday Night. For more info call (956)-722-BASE (2273).
For the 3rd straight game, the WhiteWings got on the board first. With one out David Fowler struck out but reached first on a drop 3rd strike. Kevin Griffin followed with a single. Then Ryan Fox walked to load the bases with only one out. Broncos starter Henry Lozado would get Brian Nichols to foul out for the 2nd out. However Argelis Nunez would single scoring Fowler and Griffin to give Harlingen the early 2-0 lead.
Laredo would get on the board in the 2nd inning. Ivan Reyes led off the inning with a walk and moved to 2nd on a ground out by Santiago Guerrero. Johnny Lopez would then single moving Reyes to 3rd. With Anthony Bennett batting, WhiteWings starting pitcher Jorge Lugo threw a wild pitch allowing Reyes to score. That would cut Harlingen's lead in half 2-1.
The WhiteWings would get that run right back in the bottom of the 2nd. Carl Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He then stole 2nd base and tried to advance to third on Candelario Perez's ground out. The throw by Johnny Lopez was low and could not be handled by Arnoldo Ponce who was covering 3rd. The ball went out of play allowing Johnson to score to give Harlingen a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the 3rd inning. Luany Sanchez would lead off with a single and go to 2nd as the throw got by Brian Nichols. After a wild pitch that advanced Sanchez to third, Edgard Clemente walked. Then Jose Salas hit into a double play but Sanchez would score to make the score 3-2.
Harlingen would score again in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Kevin Griffin and Ryan Fox were walked to start off the inning. Then Brian Nichols singled in Griffin to make the score 4-2
The WhiteWings would blow the game open in the bottom of the 4th. A scary moment started off the inning as Lozado hit Candelario Perez in the head. He lay motionless for a few minutes but was able to walk off under his own power. He was replaced in the game by Miguel Peguero. Bub Bergstrom would then reach base on a bunt single putting runners on 1st and 2nd. David Fowler would hit a slow roller towards 3rd baseman Luany Sanchez whose throw got away from 1st baseman Johnny Lopez as he collided with Fowler allowing Peguero and Bergstrom to score and Fowler to reach 3rd. Lopez would leave the game after injuring himself in the collision with Fowler at 1st base. Kevin Griffin would double knocking in Fowler from 3rd and then after a walk Aregelis Nunez singled in Griffing to make the score 8-3.
That would be it for Broncos starter Henry Lozado who went 3 1/3 innings giving up 8 runs 4 of which were earned. He struck out 4 hitters, walked 4 hitters and also hit 3 batters.
The Broncos would strike back in the top of the 5th inning. Dwayne White led off with a walk and went to 2nd on a single by Arnoldo Ponce. Then with one out Edgard Clemente hit a 3 run home run his 4th of the season making the score 8-5.
Harlingen would strike again in the bottom of the 5th against Broncos reliever Matt Bauman. Bub Bergstrom led off with a single. Then Bauman looked to have him picked off of 1st base but the ball got by Jose Salas allowing Bergstrom to go to 3rd. Bauman would get the next two hitters two line out before walking Ryan Fox. Brian Nichols followed with a double scoring both Bergstrom and Fox to make the score 10-5.
Laredo would inch closer in the top of the 7th inning. Luany Sanchez reached base on an error by the shortstop Miguel Peguero. Sanchez would end up at 2nd on the play and went to 3rd base on a wild pitch. With one out Jose Salas singled up the middle scoring Sanchez. Ivan Reyes would follow with a single and then both runners would advance on a balk by reliever Todd Lutz. But Lutz would rebound to get Santiago Guerrero and Josh Morrison to ground out to end the threat leaving the score at 10-6.
Harlingen would add on another run in the bottom of the 7th. Bub Bergstrom led off with a single and then stole 2nd base. He advanced to third on a ground out by Kevin Griffin. Nathan Crawford came in to face the WhiteWings Ryan Fox and Fox hit a 2 run home run to extend the lead to 6.
Laredo would not threaten the rest of the game as they dropped the final of the 3 game series by a score of 12-6.
The Broncos fall back to .500 with a 6-6 record. Laredo continues on their 9 game road trip after an off day on Monday when they take on the Alexandria Aces on Tuesday night at 7:05.
