San Angelo Colts News Release

Harlingen, Texas --- The Colts failed to sweep their season-opening series, falling to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, 2-1, Sunday night at Harlingen Field.

WhiteWings starter Bobby O'Neill kept the Colts' bats quiet all night long. O'Neill (1-0) allowed an unearned run on two hits through 8 1/3 innings of work. He also had four 1-2-3 innings.

The Colts lone run came in the third inning. Shortstop Danny Hernandez was hit by a pitch, and then advanced the third base on a throwing error by O'Neill. Hernandez scored on an RBI ground out by third baseman Steve Rinaudo.

Rio Grande Valley responded in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, shortstop Troy Zawadzki had an RBI fielder's choice ground out that brought home third baseman Kevin Lusson. Lusson reached base on a one-out walk earlier in the inning.

The game remained tied at one until the eighth, when the WhiteWings hit three consecutive singles to take a 2-1 advantage. Left fielder Albert Carpen reached base with a two-out, bunt single, and then advanced to third on a Colts' throwing error. Second baseman Thomas Shull then hit an RBI single into right-centerfield that scored Carpen.

Colts' reliever Jeremy Tietze (0-1) surrendered the run, and therefore took the loss.

San Angelo's bats were silenced again in the ninth, as reliever Kyle Wahl recorded his first save.

The loss drops the Colts to 3-1, while the WhiteWings improve to 1-3 with the victory. The Colts' next game will be their home opener Tuesday night against the Edinburg Roadrunners.

It will be a $2 Tuesday, sponsored by Budweiser. All general admission tickets, longneck beers, hot dogs, and popcorn are just $2, courtesy of Budweiser. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 14th season. For more information or to purchase season tickets, contact the Colts' front office at 94-COLTS.
