
Colts Eliminate WhiteWings

San Angelo, Texas---The Colts (48-32) eliminated the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (39-41) from playoff contention, as San Angelo scored four runs in the eighth inning to topple the road squad 8-4. Chace Vacek (3-3) earned the victory as he went 2.2 innings and allowed no runs. Jose Fragoso (1-2) was distributed the loss as he surrendered four eighth inning runners to cross home plate.
As the Colts looked to avoid the series sweep, Rio Grande Valley collected a single run in the first three innings against Colts starter Caleb Rodgers. A leadoff homer to right by Agustin Septimo, his second of the season began the scoring. In the second inning, a Joaquin Rodriguez RBI single scored Jose Torres to add to their lead. The third inning began with an error by Rich Paz allowing Brian Nichols to reach first. Rico Santana sent a fly ball to left field that Ronnie Gaines could not corral, Nichols scored form third base securing a 3-0 lead.
The Colts offense was uplifted in the bottom of the third frame. With two runners on, Bryan Frichter delivered a game-tying swing; a three-run shot that knotted the contest at three. Frichter, the league leader with a .381 batting average, collected his eighth homer of the year.
A San Angelo error in the fourth inning gave the lead back to the Wings. A miscue in right field by Nick Mahin, from a Juan Melo single, brought home Sandy DeLeon as the lead swung back in favor of Rio Grande Valley.
Travis Calloway moved Nick Mahin to second base with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the sixth. The WhiteWings removed starter Carlos Artiles for the right-hander Jose Frogoso to face Charely Belew. The Colts shortstop sent a shallow fly ball to right field, an RBI single ensued scoring Mahin from second and tying the game at four. After a walk to Ronnie Gaines, a pass ball advanced Gaines and Belew to second and third base. Rio Grande Valley elected to walk Hunter Jobes and take their chances with Rich Paz. A hard hit ground ball to Septimo resulted in a 4-6-3 double play. The game remained tied.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Colts broke the tie. Nick Mahin led off with a walk and Travis calloway singled. After out was recorded, Ronnie Gaines reached on an error by shortstop Joaquin Rodriguez allowing Mahin to score. A walk by Hunter Jobes set up a bases loaded opportunity for Selwyn Langaigne. He delivered a two-run single and allowed Jobes to move to third. The center-fielder came plateward on a wild pitch to make it 8-4.
