San Angelo Colts News Release

AMARILLO, Texas - If the San Angelo Colts are going to make a serious run at the ULB second-half championship, Friday's game in Amarillo might serve as a big momentum boost. After trailing 4-0 at the end of the three innings, the Colts stormed back and defeated the Dillas 6-5 in the opener of a crucial three-game series.

San Angelo (13-11) and Amarillo (13-11) are now tied for second place and each team is six games behind the first-place Alexandria Aces.

The Dillas took a 3-0 lead in the first with three unearned runs off Colts starter Matt Duff. An error by third baseman Jason Crosland opened the inning and a sacrifice bunt, walk, and infield single later, the bases were loaded with one out. Duff (8-3) struck out Gary Schneidmiller for the second out but Jack Chapman hit a three-run double to put Amarillo on top. The Colts committed two more errors in the second inning, leading to another unearned run and a 4-0 Dillas lead.

In the fourth, the Colts' offense sprang to life with a four-run inning after failing to score for the last 16 innings since Wednesday. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Crosland hit a single to left field off Dillas starter Kyle Allen (5-6). Madison Edwards initially stopped at third base, but sprinted home with the Colts' first run when Brendan Hitchcock misplayed the ball in left. Later in the inning, Eric Harryman came to the plate with the bases loaded and two out and tied the score at 4-4 with a three-run double to left-center field.

San Angelo took its first lead of the night in the fifth on three straight singles, the last of which came off the bat of Crosland and gave the Colts a 5-4 advantage. San Angelo then scored an unearned run in the sixth to take a two-run lead. With one out, Andres Rodriguez and Jason Diaz reached on back-to-back singles and Rodriguez then advanced to third on a passed ball during Wyn Diggs' at-bat. Diggs grounded out to second base, bringing home Rodriguez to make it 6-4.

The Dillas made it a one-run game in the seventh when Danny Bravo, who tripled with one out, scored on a sacrifice fly by Schneidmiller. The Colts' bullpen was perfect though, as Taylor Fleming threw a 1-2-3 eighth and Chace Vacek pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout for his fourth save. Duff picked up the win, hurling seven innings, allowing five runs, only one earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Allen took the loss, lasting 5 2/3 innings, giving up all six runs, five earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

The Colts continue their longest road trip of the season at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, when they take on the Amarillo Dillas in game two of a three-game series. The Colts return to San Angelo on Monday, July 30 to begin a seven-game homestand.
