San Angelo's Artz Now A Yankee

Edinburg, TX; July 27, 2007- United League Baseball (ULB) and the San Angelo Colts announced today that the contract of San Angelo right-hander Stephen Artz has been purchased by the New York Yankees. Artz will be reporting to the Yankees Class-A affiliate in Charleston, South Carolina.

Artz, a native of Stone Mountain, Georiga, joined the Colts in 2006 after finishing up his career at Samford University. The 23-year old right-hander is in his second year as a pro and with the Colts. In 2006 Artz finished the season with a 3-2 record and 4.35 ERA and was used as both a starter and a reliever. He struck out 47 batters and walked only 15 with the opposition hitting just .268 off of him

In 2007 Artz was tapped as the closer for the Colts by Field Manager Doc Edwards and Pitching Coach Darryll Roque. In 25 relief appearances Artz compiled a 2.86 ERA while earning 10 saves. Artz struck out 46 batters in 28.1 innings of work while walking only three.

Artz becomes the fourth player from United League Baseball to be sold to a Major League organization in 2007.

United League Baseball is an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is in its second season with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana. The ULB will play a 100-game schedule between May and August 2007. The ULB's seventh franchise will be located in Brownsville, TX
