Colts Avoid Sweep with 5-4 Win

July 13, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas --- Designated hitter Braden Embry scored a go-ahead run in the sixth, and another in the eighth, as the San Angelo Colts defeated the Fort Worth Cats, 5-4, Friday night at Foster Field. The win snapped the Colts' three game losing streak, and once again prevented a Cats' series sweep.

Embry drew an RBI, bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning, and then scored all the way from first on a three-run double by shortstop Jordan Marks. The double brought home centerfielder Justin Reed, catcher Bubby Williams, and then Embry to give the Colts a 4-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth, Embry reached base on an error by Cats' reliever Matt Eshleman. A sacrifice bunt by right fielder Tyler Wagner moved Embry to second, and a single by Marks advanced Embry to third. Embry then scored on an RBI fielder's choice by left fielder Cody Hudson.

It was Hudson's professional debut.

Both starting pitchers took no decisions. Cats' starter T.J. Bozeman struck out a game-high 11 batters in five-plus innings, but he gave up the tying run in the sixth. Colts' starter Demetrius Banks surrendered three runs on six hits in seven innings.

Cats' reliever Matt Eshleman (2-1) suffered the loss. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in three innings.

Meanwhile, Colts' reliever Cephas Howard (3-2) earned the win by virtue of pitching the top of the eighth. Closer Alfredo Caballero earned his seventh save with a perfect ninth inning.

The win improves San Angelo to 23-23, while the loss drops Fort Worth to 31-17. The Colts begin a four-game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Friday night at Foster Field.

It will be Little League Bat Giveaway Night, sponsored by Farmers Insurance. The first 500 fans through the front gates will get a little league bat, courtesy of Farmers Insurance. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

The Colts are in the midst of a 12-game home stand. The home stand runs from Tuesday, July 9 through Saturday, July 20, and in that time the Colt face the Fort Worth Cats, Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, and Edinburg Roadrunners. After this home stand, the Colts begin an eight-game road trip against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and the Edinburg Roadrunners. The Colts then return home for their last 12-game home stand of the regular season on Tuesday, July 30.
