Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks hand Charleston Battery their first loss of 2023 as they pick up three points on the road.
The scoring started right away as the Switchbacks #99 Maalique Foster found the net in just the 4th minute to give the black and blue an early lead. Unfortunately, the momentum would be immediately halted with a lightning delay called right after the restarting kickoff.
It took almost two hours for the weather to pass, but once play resumed, Colorado Springs kept the pressure up. In the 15th minute, a loose ball outside the 18-yard box was netted by #13 Stevie Echevarria which found its way in through some traffic in front of the frame. The Battery were able to respond in the 27th minute with Leland Archer finding the scoresheet to cut the visitors' lead in half. The 2-1 score would stand as the teams made their way inside for halftime.
Both teams began to mix it up on the pitch in the second half with five cautions dished out after halftime, three to the Switchbacks and two for the Battery. Though the intensity picked up, the scoring went cold with the 2-1 score holding at the full-time whistle.
Colorado Springs hands Charleston their first loss of the season as they pick up a huge three points on the east coast to move to 16 points on the season. With the win COS moves into second in the West as they leap-frog San Diego Loyal SC and trail the undefeated Sacramento Republic by just two points. The Switchbacks are now unbeaten in their last seven USL Championship matches when they have the lead at halftime (5 wins and 2 draws), a streak that dates back to July of 2022.
The Colorado Springs Switchbacks return back at Weidner Field on Friday, May 5th for a meeting with El Paso Locomotive in our Cinco De Mayo match. Tickets to that match and all other matches for the 2023 season are available at www.switchbacksfc.com/schedule.
