Charlotte Independence News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Independence today announced that the USL club has received forward Caleb Calvert and midfielder Emmanuel Appiah on loan from its MLS affiliate the Colorado Rapids. The loan agreements cover the duration of the USL and MLS seasons, but per the Right of Recall incorporated in both loan agreements, the Rapids retain the right to recall either player at any point during the MLS regular season, subject to MLS roster compliance guidelines.
"This will be a great opportunity for Emmanuel and Calvert to progress in their development," said Rapids Senior Director of Soccer Development Brian Crookham, who also is serving as Independence Technical Director. "We feel that gaining quality minutes with Charlotte will allow both players to build on the fantastic preseason they had."
Calvert spent the 2015 season on loan with the Independence, logging 489 minutes in 20 appearances. Though he started just two games, Calvert recorded two goals and two assists for the Independence, who finished the season at 10-8-10. The Rapids acquired Calvert, 19, in the Chivas USA dispersal draft of 2014. The Southern California native originally was signed as a Homegrown Player by Chivas USA in July 2013, at the age of 16, making him the youngest player in club history to sign a professional contact.
Appiah, who was born in Ghana and raised in Ohio, was the Rapids' first-round selection (15th overall) in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. He spent the previous five years at the University of Cincinnati, earning 2015 Second Team All-American Athletic Conference and Second Team All-Ohio accolades after finishing second on the team in points (16), goals (5) and assists (6). Appiah ended his reign as a Bearcat with a total of 65 appearances, 46 starts, seven goals and 11 assists.
The Independence open the 2016 season on Saturday, March 26, with a home match against Louisville City FC at Ramblewood Stadium. Kickoff is schedule for 7:00pm ET. Tickets are available at www.charlotteindependence.com/tickets or by calling 704-206-1515.
