Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced the signing of midfielder Mael Corboz to the 2016 USL regular season roster.
Corboz is a recent graduate from the University of Maryland where he experienced a standout soccer career. With Corboz's exceptional passing abilities and quick footwork, it is no surprise that he was awarded First Team All-Big Ten both his junior and senior year. He was also named the Big Ten Tournament's Most Valuable Offensive Player his junior year. Even before transferring to Maryland, Corboz made a name for himself at Rutgers University. Here he was awarded the honor of MVP after his freshman season and chosen as captain for his junior year, starting every game both seasons.
"I am very excited to join the Wilmington Hammerheads," said Corboz. "I have only heard great things about the organization and the tight knit community in Wilmington. I really believe it is a great place for me to launch my professional career. I'm excited to get started and work hard on the field."
The 21 year old, New Jersey native is joining the Hammerheads after he signed a homegrown MLS contract with the New York Red Bulls. Corboz also received playing experience with both the New York Bulls' U18 and U23 teams. Mael played for U.S. soccer legend Tab Ramos during his youth career. Ramos is currently U.S. Soccer's Technical Director, as well as Cedar Stars Academy's (CSA) Technical Director in New Jersey. CSA is part of the Hammerhead sport family owned by Hammerhead's owner George Altirs.
Head Coach Briggs stated, "Mael is young talent. I think fans will be excited to come and see a player of his ability this season. He is a great addition to the roster, as well as the Wilmington Community."
