Colorado Eagles News Release
BOISE, ID. - Eagles forward Cam Maclise scored a pair of goals, as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held on for a 6-3 victory over the Idaho Steelheads in Game Five on Saturday. The win also gives Colorado its first playoff series victory in the ECHL, as they knocked off Idaho four games to one. Colorado now advances to face the Allen Americans in the second round of the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs, with the full schedule set to be released in the days to come.
Colorado would get off to an early start on Saturday, as a two-on-one rush down the ice would set up forward Julien Nantel to slam home his third goal of the postseason and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead just 1:42 into the contest.
Just over four minutes later, Colorado would take advantage on the power play, as forward Luke Salazar notched his first playoff goal with a shot from the top of the circle, extending the Eagles advantage to 2-0 at the 6:00 mark of the first period.
After successfully killing off a penalty against defenseman Matt Register, his release from the box would spring another two-on-one rush, this time being capped off by Maclise's first goal of the postseason, growing the Eagles lead to 3-0 with 8:43 remaining in the opening frame.
Idaho would finally strike back late in the first, when defenseman Travis Walsh lit the lamp with a shot from the point on the power play to trim Colorado's advantage to 3-1 with 59 seconds to play in the period.
Maclise would strike again at the 7:36 mark of the second period, redirecting a pass from the wall from Michael Sdao and stretching the Eagles lead back to 4-1.
The lead would be cut quickly, as the Steelheads would score back-to-back goals just 2:58 apart to reinsert themselves back into the contest. The scoring started when forward Joe Basarba fired a wrister off a face-off win that would beat Eagles goalie Lukas Hafner and cut the Colorado lead to 4-2 with 9:05 remaining in the second period.
Idaho would pull within in a single goal when forward Kyle Jean tracked down a loose puck in the low slot and slid it into the back of the net, making it just a 4-3 Colorado advantage with 6:07 to play in the middle frame.
The Eagles would bounce back with a 5-on-3 power-play goal, as forward Alex Belzile stuffed home a rebound on the side of the cage to put Colorado back on top by a count of 5-3 at the 14:45 mark of the second period.
Idaho would try to mount a comeback in the third period, but Hafner would stop all eight shots thrown his way in the final frame, while forward Ryan Harrison added an empty netter with 1:59 remaining in regulation to give Colorado the 6-3 victory.
Colorado finished the night going 2-for3 on the power play, while holding Idaho to a 1-for-6 mark on the man-advantage. Hafner finished the night stopping 34 of Idaho's 37 shots, while Komm surrendered five goals on 24 shots.
The Eagles return to action when they face the Allen Americans in the second round of the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs. Tickets for all second round games will go on sale on Tuesday, April 25th at 10:00am.
