Colon Assigned to Trapper Roster

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that right-handed pitcher Jose Colon has been transferred to the club from Saltillo of the Mexican League. He will take the roster spot of right-handed pitcher Keith Evans, who was released by the Montreal Expos. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 23 players, 11 pitchers, three catchers, four infielders and five outfielders, plus two players (right-handed pitcher Troy Mattes and first baseman Joe Vitiello) on the disabled list.

Colon, 28, was 1-1, 4.28 (27.1 IP - 13 ER) with seven saves in 25 appearances with Saltillo. He was loaned to the club by the Expos on March 30 after signing as a free agent with Montreal on November 21, 2002. Colon allowed 14 runs on 30 hits and three walks, while fanning 16 for Saltillo. Opponents batted .280 (30-for-107) off the reliever. The native of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic was originally singed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cleveland Indians in 1995 and had spent his entire career with the Indians organization up until the end of the 2002 campaign. Colon spent last year with Double-A Akron, where he was 5-4, 2.37 (76.0 IP - 20 ER) with five saves in 46 appearances (two starts). He began the 2003 season with a career minor league record of 25-11 in 208 appearances (13 starts). Colon has posted a 2.38 ERA (363.0 IP - 96 ER) and recorded 65 saves entering this season. He is the younger brother of Chicago White Sox right-hander Bartolo Colon.

Evans, 27, was 1-2, 6.00 (21.0 IP - 14 ER) with one save in 12 appearances with the Trappers this season. He allowed 15 runs on 28 hits and six walks, while fanning six. Opponents batted .322 (28-for-87) off the Los Angeles, California native. Evans split the 2002 season between the Gulf Coast League Expos, where he was 0-0, 1.13 (8.0 IP - 1 ER) in three appearances (two starts), and Triple-A Ottawa, where he was 0-5, 2.22 (28.1 IP - 7 ER) in 16 appearances (two starts). He was originally selected by the Expos in the eighth round of the 1996 draft out of the University of California-Berkeley. Evans entered the 2003 season with a career minor league record of 38-49 and a 3.59 ERA (677.0 IP - 270 ER) with one save in 164 appearances (93 starts).
