Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â Third baseman Mike Gulan and first baseman Carlos Rivera each blasted a home run to ignite a jammed Greer Stadium and lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Omaha Royals on Saturday evening in the second game of a four-game series.
The Sounds (27-20) drew 10,041 fans to the game, their second-largest home crowd of the year.
Rivera opened the scoring with a solo blast off the right-field foul pole in the bottom of the second inning against Omaha starter Wes Obermueller. Nashville doubled its advantage with an unearned run in the third when Tike Redman plated Aaron Holbert with an RBI single.
Nashville starter Justin Reid allowed only one baserunner through the first five innings (walk) before Omaha shortstop Brian Harris opened the sixth with a bunt single to log the Royals' first hit. Harris scored Omaha's lone run later in the inning when Julius Matos singled as the first batter to face Sounds reliever Duaner Sanchez.
Gulan (1-for-3, 3 RBI) smacked his sixth homer of the year â a two-run shot â in the bottom of the seventh to increase the Nashville lead to 4-1, then plated Redman with the game's final run on a sacrifice fly an inning later.
Sounds left-fielder John Barnes had his team-best 13-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-2 evening but had the bat taken out of his hands in his final two plate appearances as he was plunked by Obermueller in each instance.
Reid (2-2) picked up his first victory in three starting assignments this season after allowing one run and only Harris' bunt single over 5.2 innings. Jim Mann closed out the game with 2.1 scoreless frames to pick up his first save for Nashville. Obermueller (6-4) logged a 116-pitch complete game in the losing effort for Omaha, allowing five runs and striking out five in eight innings.
The clubs meet in the third game of the series at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening. Nashville right-hander John Wasdin (4-1) will face Omaha right-hander (and former Sound) James Baldwin (1-2). It will be "Bark In The Park" night at Greer Stadium. All fans are encouraged to bring their favorite pooch to the game.
