Collop Leads Charge in Shutout Victory

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (JULY 13, 2012) - Justin Collop took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and tossed seven shutout innings in Winston-Salem's 5-0 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Friday night at TicketReturn.com Field.

Collop (7-2) retired the first 12 Pelicans he faced before walking Christian Villanueva, who was later erased on an inning-ending double play. With two down in the sixth, Teodoro Martinez yanked a double down the left field line to end Collop's no-no bid.

It was the longest no-hit bid of the season by a Dash (11-11, 55-36-1) pitcher. Two other starters have taken a no-hitter into the sixth inning, with both of those instances also coming against Myrtle Beach (14-8, 50-42). Matt Heidenreich tossed five and a third innings of no-hit baseball May 17, while Spencer Arroyo's bid ended against the leadoff hitter in the sixth inning in a double dip opener May 15.

Collop finished with a season-high seven innings, and he scattered three hits. The Wayne, Mich., native faced only three more than the minimum and whiffed three in his third win as a starter this season.

Taylor Thompson relieved Collop and finished the four-hit shutout, the Dash's ninth of the season. Thompson allowed just one knock and struck out two Pelicans, running his second-half total to 17 strikeouts in 11 and two-thirds frames of work.

For the second straight night, the Dash jumped out to an early advantage. Dan Black's infield single in the first not only brought home a run, but it also extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Nine different Winston whackers have posted a hitting streak of 10 games or more, while the rest of the Carolina League can only boast 16 such spurts.

Two innings later, Carlos Sanchez lashed a run-producing triple down the right-field line, and Trayce Thompson plated Sanchez with a single on the next pitch to push Winston's lead to 3-0.

The Dash posted another two-run frame in the fourth thanks to a Sanchez sacrifice fly and a Thompson RBI single to make it 5-0. Winston-Salem beat up All-Star Kyle Hendricks (4-8) over his five innings. Hendricks, who was the CL's active leader in earned run average entering Friday's action, allowed all five runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits over five innings.

Winston and Myrtle wrap up this four-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Chris Bassitt (1-2, 2.98 ERA) takes to the hill as a starter for the first time in his professional career against fellow right-hander Randy Henry (5-3, 1.41 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 on wsdash.com.
