THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats beat the Salem Red Sox 9-2...2B Matt Weaver,3B Edward Salcedo, and 1B Chris Garcia all hit home runs in the game for Lynchburg...RHP Gus Schlosser tossed six scoreless innings on his way to his ninth win of the season...The Hillcats are now 11-10 in the second half and in first place in the Northern Division...
VS. SALEM: Lynchburg is 8-7 against the Red Sox this year...Most recently the Hillcats swept the Red Sox in three games to open up the second half...After a rainout postponed the opener, the Hillcats beat the Red Sox with a walk-off squeeze bunt in game one 6/22 and RHP Aaron Northcraft followed that with a no-hitter in game two that night...The two clubs have met four times in Salem, spitting those contests 2-2...
BACK BACK BACK GONE: The Hillcats launched three homers into the Salem sky last night...2B Matt Weaver (9), 3B Edward Salcedo (10), and 1B Chris Garcia (8)...The three blasts matched the season-high for a single game for the 'Cats...They've done it five times now...
IT'S THE 5-0: Lynchburg won it's 50th game of the season last night on July 12, now 50-41 this season...It took the 2011 Hillcats until August 11 to accomplish the same feat...They were 50-66...The 'Cats are the third team in the Carolina League to reach the 50-win mark this year (Winston-Salem Dash 54-36, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 50-41)...
TEAM EFFORT: Each starter for the Hillcats recorded at least one hit, tallying 14 total, in last night's 9-2 win...All nine also either drove in or scored a run or both...This came one night after being shut out for the seventh time this season on Wednesday...Had averaged 8.8 runs per game, batting .320 over their previous five games, and seemed to get back to that pace last night...
NORTH 'K' RAFT: RHP Aaron Northcraft struck out nine in six innings Monday night in a losing effort...He became the first Carolina League hurler to reach the century mark in strikeouts this year, now with 103, leading the circuit...Among the league leaders in other categories as well..Tied for second in wins (8), seventh in ERA (3.45), tied for first in complete games (2) and shutouts (1), fourth in innings pitched (99.0), and fifth in average against (.241)...
WEAVER SEEING RED: INF/OF Matt Weaver went 2-for-4 last night with a home run...It was his ninth of the season in just 162 at-bats...He has a home run for every 18 at-bats this season, which would be the second-best rate in the league behind Frederick's 1B Aaron Baker (15.68 AB/HR), but Weaver does not have enough plate appearances to qualify...Still batting just .241 on the season, but surging against the Red Sox hitting .296 with three home runs against them...The only team he swings it better against are the Carolina Mudcats (.375, 1 HR)...
SCHLOSSER AND THE STAFF: RHP Gus Schlosser tossed six scoreless innings last night, making four straight starts of exactly six frames...It was also his fourth scoreless outing...More significant however was that he won his ninth game of the season...The only other nine-game winner in the league is starting tonight for the Hillcats, RHP Cody Martin...Schlosser lowered his ERA to 3.45, which ranks seventh in the circuit..All five Hillcat starters currently rank in the top ten in that category...Schlosser is also second in innings pitched (112.1) and sixth in strikeouts (89)...
RED HOT SALCE: 3B Edward Salcedo went 2-for-4 last night with a home run...Has a hit in seven of his last eight...Missed the first four days of July, not injury related...Since returning, he is hitting .464 (13-for-28) with four doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, ten runs scored, and five walks...Had multiple hits in four straight games...Raised his averaged from .257 to .276 through seven July games...Has a hit in 16 of his last 19 games...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Yeiper Castillo was signed as an international free agent in November 2005...Spent 2006-07 with the DSL Red Sox...Posted an ERA under 3.00 while striking out 96 in 99 innings...Made stateside debut in 2008 with Short-season Lowell...Went 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 15 appearances, 11 starts...Started 2009 with Low-A Greenville but was sent back to Lowell after posting a 7.04 ERA through nine appearances, four starts...Finished the season with Lowell (6-1, 2.92)...2010, went back to Greenville...Went 4-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 15 starts...Missed over two months from beginning of June to the beginning of August...Did not play in 2011 due to injury...2012, went 4-5 with a 3.58 ERA with Greenville...Called up to Salem July 5...Pitched six innings July 8 in his Advanced-A debut...Allowed one run on four hits, walked four, and struck out four against the Frederick Keys, took a no-decision...Makes a his first start against the Hillcats tonight...
