College Park Skyhawks Announce Coaching Staff for Inaugural Season
COLLEGE PARK, GA - The College Park Skyhawks, the official G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, announced the coaching staff for the 2019-20 G League season today. Head Coach Noel Gillespie returns for his second year at the helm of the franchise and his first in College Park. He's joined by former NBA players Calbert Cheaney and Shelden Williams, and Mfon Udofia and Therian Williams.
Gillespie returns for his second season with the franchise and his first in College Park. Last season, his squad led the G League in assists per game at 27.0 and compiled a 24-26 overall record, nearly missing out on post-season play. Gillespie spent two seasons with the Greensboro Swarm prior to being named the head coach of the Erie BayHawks, the former G League Affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, for the 2018-19 season. Gillespie spent time with the Denver Nuggets as an assistant coach and with the Phoenix Suns as a video coordinator. A Milwaukee native, he graduated from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"Our coaching staff brings a mix of experience, knowledge and talent," said Gillespie. "Calbert and Shelden both have NBA playing experience, Mfon was part of the Nigerian national team staff this past summer, and Therian, coming from the Hawks' video department, brings a wealth of knowledge. We trust this group to provide our players with the guidance needed to be successful in our inaugural season."
Cheaney, an Indiana graduate, was an assistant for the Erie BayHawks in the 2019-20 season and returns for his second season on Gillespie's team. The sixth overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft, Cheaney played for Washington Bullets/Wizards, Boston Celtics, Nuggets, Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors over his 13-year career playing career. In 825 regular season games, he compiled averages of 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 26.7 minutes (.466 FG%, .298 3 FG%, .691 FT%). Following his final season in the NBA, Cheaney spent two seasons with the Warriors as a special assistant to the front office before being promoted to assistant coach in 2010-11. Cheaney then served as the Director of Basketball Operations position with the Louisville Cardinals men's basketball program from 2011-2013.
Shelden Williams also spent last season on Gillespie's staff in Erie. Williams was selected fifth overall in the 2006 NBA Draft out of Duke and played in the NBA for six years, suiting up for the Hawks, the Sacramento Kings, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Celtics, the Nuggets, the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets. His #23 jersey is retired from Duke and he was inducted into the Duke Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. He currently holds the Duke Blue Devils record for total rebounds, total blocks, and total offensive rebounds.
Udofia returns for his second stint under Gillespie. He spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Delaware Blue Coats and this past summer was an assistant coach for the Nigeria national basketball team in the FIBA World Cup as they qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics. In 2015-16, he played overseas for Siarka Tarnobrzeg of Poland. He was a member of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball team from 2009-13.
Therian Williams joins the Skyhawks staff after spending the past three seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, first as a basketball operations intern before being promoted to Assistant Video Coordinator and Player Development Assistant in 2018. Prior to the Hawks, he was a video coordinator and assistant coach for his alma mater, Saint Mary's College of California from 2014-16. He graduated from Saint Mary's in 2013, where he was a men's basketball program manager for four seasons.
The Skyhawks begin their inaugural season on Nov. 8, as they face off against the Erie BayHawks on the road. Nov. 21 marks the first time College Park plays at home, taking on the Delaware Blue Coats in a 7p.m. tip at the Gateway Center Arena @ College Park.
