Cold Night Yields Cold Results; Tourists Lose 18-3

April 7, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

SALISBURY - Asheville had to deal with cold weather and a hot Delmarva Shorebirds offense on Saturday night. The Shorebirds handed the Tourists an 18-3 loss. Not since June 30, 2014 have the Asheville Tourists allowed an opponent to score at least 18 runs. On that night in 2014, the Tourists lost to Greensboro 20-2.

The good news is the 2014 Tourists finished 89-49 on the year and won the South Atlantic League championship. The 2014 team also opened the season with a four-game set against Delmarva--and lost three of them.

For this year's Tourists bunch to manage that, they must find a way to win Sunday's series finale as the Shorebirds have now taken the first three games of the season. Asheville started the game hot with three hits and a run in the top of the first inning. Delmarva answered with four runs in the bottom half against starting pitcher Erick Julio.

After Julio seemed to settle down, Seamus Curran hit a two-run Home Run in the bottom of the fourth. Delmarva added one more in the inning and the Tourists trailed 7-1. Asheville plated one in the fifth on a Ryan Vilade infield single. They crept closer with a sacrifice fly by Taylor Snyder in the top of the sixth. However, the momentum quickly swung back to Delmarva.

The Shorebirds began the bottom of the sixth with eight singles and two walks. Ten straight reached base and eight came in to score. The home team added three more runs the following inning.

On a positive note, Vilade became the first Tourists player to record a three-hit ballgame while Shael Mendoza and Casey Golden each recorded a base hit for the third consecutive game. Asheville also turned a season-high four double plays.

Riley Pint will attempt to pitch the Tourists to their first win of the season in Sunday's series finale. The first pitch is set for 2:05pm.
