Coe Provides Saints a Lift on Short Rest, Saints Double up Canaries 6-3

ST. PAUL, MN - Robert Coe wanted the ball on three days rest and it proved to be the right decision. He tossed 6.2 strong innings to pick up his fifth win of the season and move within four wins of the all-time franchise record as the St. Paul Saints defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 6-3 on Thursday night at CHS Field in front of 8,590. With the win the Saints improved to 28-13, best record in the American Association.

With the Saints rotation up in the air, Coe asked for the ball on short rest and delivered. He cruised through the first two innings and gave up back-to-back singles in the third. He would strike out .367 hitter Blake Schmit and then got Darwin Perez to fly out to end the inning.

He retired eight of the next nine hitters before giving up a solo homer to Jake Taylor, his third of the season, in the sixth that made the score 6-1 Saints.

In the seventh Coe got the first two hitters and then gave up a solo homer to Michael Pair, his fifth of the season, to make it 6-2. After a single to Ryan Lashley manager George Tsamis pulled Coe. He went 6.2 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four. The victory was the 37th of his career with the Saints, four shy of passing Charlie Ruud who had 40 from 2005-09.

The Saints offense struck right away in the first when Alonzo Harris led off with a triple and scored on Breland Almadova's sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

In the third the Saints capitalized on a Canaries error when Chad Christensen reached on an error by first baseman Jake Taylor. A sacrifice moved Christensen to second and he stole third. Almadova walked with two outs and for the third time this season the Saints pulled off the double steal, with Almadova swiping second and Christensen stealing home on the throw down to second to make it 2-0. The Saints have stolen home four times, three on double steals and one on a straight steal.

In the fourth Angelo Songco led off with a double and moved to third on a single from Tony Thomas. They were still there with two outs, but Christensen clubbed a three-run homer to left-center, his second of the season, to make it 5-0.

The Saints finished their scoring in the sixth when Nate Hanson doubled with two outs and scored on a single from Songco to give the Saints a 6-0 cushion.

Ryan Rodebaugh picked up his 10th save in 11 opportunities by pitching a perfect ninth inning and leads the league in saves.

The Saints now head out on the road for a three game series against the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. The Saints send LHP Eric Veglahn (0-1, 27.00) against T-Bones LHP Mike Kickham (0-0, 4.50). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
