RailCats Rally in Ninth to Take Series

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (20-20) lost 5-4 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park on Thursday night.
With the Goldeyes ahead 4-3 in the top of the ninth inning, the RailCats rallied for two runs to take the lead. Frank Martinez drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a soft double down the left field line from Jeremy Hamilton. After Jailen Peguero struck out Jose Gonzalez, a wild pitch brought in Martinez with the tying run. Pinch hitter Alex Crosby drove in Hamilton to give the RailCats a 5-4 lead with a groundball single through a drawn in infield.
The Goldeyes rallied to put runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth before Andy Roberts recorded the final out in relief of Taylor Black to earn his third save of the year. Black (3-2) earned the win in relief with one and two-thirds scoreless innings. Peguero (2-4) took the loss for Winnipeg.
The RailCats scored the first run of the game in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Carlton Tanabe's back pick attempt at first went down the right field line and allowed Gonzalez to score from third base.
In the bottom of the fourth, David Rohm drew a leadoff walk and took second on a groundball to first from Josh Romanski. Jake Eaton relieved RailCats' starter Conrad Wozniak and issued a walk to Jacob Rogers. Casio Grider tied the game with a groundball single to left. Ridge Hoopii-Haslam followed with a two-run double to right-centre field that scored Rogers and Grider.
The RailCats answered back in the top of the fifth. Jared Mederos and Elbert Devarie both singled to start the inning. Matt Petrone sacrificed the runners ahead before Brennan Metzger hit a two-run double to left-centre field. Brandon Shimo recorded the final two outs in the inning to keep the game tied, and worked two and one-third scoreless in relief of Goldeyes' starting pitcher Ethan Carnes.
Wes Darvill drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth. Two batters later, Darvill stole second base and scored the go-ahead run on a Romanski two-out, RBI single to right.
Eric Eadington relieved Shimo with two outs in the seventh and struck out the lone batter to face him. Cameron McVey worked a perfect top of the eighth for a second straight night.
Carnes took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on four hits in four and one-third innings. Carnes walked one and struck out three.
Wozniak also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on three hits in three and one-third. Wozniak walked one and struck out two. It was Wozniak's professional debut.
Rohm had his career-best 13-game hitting streak come to an end. Grider, Hoopii-Haslam, and Tanabe each had multiple hits.
The Goldeyes open a three-game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Friday afternoon. Special start time at Shaw Park for Canada Day is 4:05 p.m. Mikey O'Brien (4-2, 4.13) faces left-hander Joe Bircher (0-4, 2.42).
