Coe Produces in Overtime

BARRIE, Ont. - Brandon Coe scored at 1:51 of overtime to lift the North Bay Battalion to a 3-2 victory over the Barrie Colts in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night.

Matvey Petrov and Kyle McDonald also scored for North Bay, which got 35 saves from goaltender Joe Vrbetic in improving its won-lost-extended record to 18-11-4 for 40 points, second in the Central Division.

Coe, Avery Winslow and Ty Nelson returned to action after sitting out the previous game Thursday night, in which the Battalion ended a six-game losing skid with a 4-3 verdict via shootout over the visiting Mississauga Steelheads.

Hunter Haight and Cooper Matthews scored for Barrie as goaltender Matteo Lalama faced 24 shots in a spectator-free Sadlon Arena. Barrie is 14-7-3 for 31 points, third in the division.

The Colts, whose previous game was a 5-2 road win Dec. 18 over the Ottawa 67's, had won six straight, including two games against North Bay. Barrie downed the Battalion 3-2 via shootout at home Dec. 11 and 1-0 on a third-period shorthanded goal by Evan Vierling the following day at Memorial Gardens.

The Colts saw three games postponed after the Ottawa outing, which followed two postponements amid the covid pandemic.

In overtime, Winslow fed the puck diagonally up the ice to Coe, who dashed down the right wing and circled the net to put the puck behind Lalama at the left post. Mitchell Russell also assisted on Coe's 21st goal of the season, which tied Petrov for the team lead.

The teams battled through a scoreless third period, in which Vrbetic foiled Chris Grisolia in alone at 5:18 after a bad clearing attempt at the blue line produced a turnover.

Barrie, which trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes, tied it at 5:42 of the second period when Haight scored to the short side from the right-wing circle on assists by Ryan Del Monte and Tai York.

Matthews connected at 16:24, a mere 20 seconds after Petrov went off for a check from behind on Nathan Allensen, who milked the play. Del Monte and Beau Akey had assists.

McDonald tied it 2-2 at 19:47, moving from the left corner to the top of the zone and driving up the slot to beat Lalama to the stick side. Assisted by Dalyn Wakely and Liam Arnsby, it was the 18th goal of the season for McDonald and his first since a trade Wednesday from the Windsor Spitfires.

Petrov struck at 4:20 of the first period, taking a pass from Arnsby on a rush and drilling the puck from the top of the left circle.

The teams each had a brief power play in the period, with Coe ripping the puck high on a good setup while Beau Jelsma served a crosschecking penalty for a foul on Coe.

Brandt Clarke eluded Wakely and Nelson in slipping from the left point to the net to test Vrbetic in the 18th minute, with the shot from the lip of the crease popping wide right.

The Battalion plays host to Mississauga at 7 p.m. Thursday.

BATTALION BULLETS: Coe and Petrov rank first and second in the OHL scoring race, with 56 and 54 points respectively ... Overager Coe has five-game goals and points streaks in which he has six goals and two assists for eight points ... Russian import Petrov has a six-game points streak in which he has two goals and eight assists for 10 points ... Overager Russell has a six-game points streak during which he has six goals and five assists for 11 points ... In keeping with OHL practice starting Jan. 1, the Battalion wore white sweaters and socks, with the home side clad in dark uniforms ... North Bay went 0-for-2 on the power play. Barrie was 1-for-4 ... The Battalion was without Paul Christopoulos, Owen Van Steensel and Kyle Jackson, while Christian Stevens, up from the Haliburton County Huskies of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League, played a sixth game this season ... Barrie was without, among others, Grayson Tiller, Matthew Sredl and the suspended Vierling ... The Colts traded Swedish import Oskar Olausson to the Oshawa Generals on Thursday, receiving Kevin Niedenz, a German import, and four OHL Priority Selection picks, including a second-rounder and two thirds. Olausson had a team-leading 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in 22 games ... On Wednesday, Barrie sent overager Nicholas Porco to the Owen Sound Attack for two picks ... The trade deadline falls at noon Monday.
