Clutch Hits Lead C's to Rain-Shortened Win

Vancouver Canadians News Release

VANCOUVER, BC - After Mother Nature washed away the first Saturday matinee of the 2023 season, she held out long enough this afternoon for the Canadians to score five runs in the first five innings before the skies opened to cut short the penultimate game of the series with the Tri-City Dust Devils (Angels) with the score 5-3.

After #11 Blue Jays prospect Dahian Santos stranded a runner at third in the top of the first, the C's struck for two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Dasan Brown - the #15 Blue Jays prospect - used his speed to force a throwing error from the shortstop then scampered to third on Alan Roden's first double of the year. A pop out brought #21 Blue Jays prospect Gabby Martinez to the plate and he promptly cashed in, striking a two-RBI single to center to give Vancouver a 2-0 lead.

Tri-City rallied to tie it in the third on a pair of walks and a two-out, two-RBI double from Arol Vera, but the Canadians took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Riley Tirotta sparked the rally with a two-out, two-strike single then Jommer Hernandez doubled him in to make it 3-2. #24 Blue Jays prospect Estiven Machado followed with an RBI double for his first hit of the year that put Brent Lavallee's club in front 4-2.

One more two-out run would score in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at first and second, Tirotta smacked another single up the middle to plate the fifth and final run of the day for the C's.

Things got interesting in the top of the sixth. Tri-City started their half of the inning with a single then a one-out double put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly followed to cut Vancouver's lead to two before a hit batsman put the tying run aboard and was about to bring the go-ahead tally to the plate. But the rain - which had been coming down steadily for the past two innings - began to pick up and the umpires waved both teams off the field. After a 30-minute delay and the deluge showing no signs of stopping, the game was called in favor of the Canadians.

Seven of nine starters had a hit, led by two knocks apiece from Roden and Tirotta. Martinez and Hernandez both reached base twice. On the mound, Cooper Benson (W, 1-0) retired the first five batters he faced between the fourth and the fifth and was on the mound in the sixth when the game came to an end.

With the win, the C's have secured their first series victory of 2023 with four wins in their first five games. They will attempt to make it four wins in a row in the series finale on Sunday afternoon as part of the first A&W Family Fun Sunday of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and coverage is available on Bally Live, MiLB TV and the Sportsnet Radio Network.
