Cloutier, Ice Pilots Shut Out Sea Wolves 1-0 In Regular Season Finale
April 10, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. â On the final day of the ECHL 2004-05 regular season, Pensacola goaltender Frederic Cloutier made 38 saves to register his fifth shutout of the season as the Ice Pilots edged the Mississippi Sea Wolves 1-0 before 6,672 fans at the Pensacola Civic Center.
The Mississippi loss, combined with the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 win at Augusta pushed the Sea Wolves down from fourth to the fifth seed in the American Conference.
Mississippi faces Gwinnett for the second straight postseason in the best-of-five Kelly Cup Playoffs beginning at 6:05 p.m. CT on Wednesday for Game 1 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia.
Due to a scheduling conflict at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, the Sea Wolves only home game of the opening round will be Game 2 at 8:35 p.m. CT, one hour later than normal on Friday.
Individual tickets for the Kelly Cup Playoffs are on sale at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum box office, all Ticketmaster locations by calling (228) 385-2600 and online at ticketmaster.com.
"We had opportunities but couldn't solve Cloutier," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "We wanted to finish as the fourth seed, but starting the Kelly Cup Playoffs on the road isn't the worst thing. All teams in the postseason have a clean slate. Our guys will be fired up and ready to go."
Pensacola (51-16-5, 107 points) scored the only goal of the game at the 4:37 mark of the first period. Nick Lindberg unleashed a shot from the slot that went off a stick, skipped high in the air and over goaltender Phil Sauve into the net. The goal for Lindberg was his third in the last two games and 15th tally of the season. Mark Rooneem and Ryan Vince picked up assists.
Mississippi (39-24-9, 87 points) had breakaways from Stephen Greeley and Anthony Battaglia, but both were both turned away by Cloutier.
After a scoreless second period, Cloutier went on to stop 14 shots in the third period to preserve his fifth shutout of the season.
Mississippi was unable to convert on nine power play chances, while Pensacola went 0-for-8. Ice Pilots outshot Sea Wolves 41-38.
Additional notes: Four Mississippi appeared in all 72 regular season games, Louis Dumont, Kerry Ellis-Toddington, Mike Jarmuth and Austin Miller ...
