
'Clones Hold off Grasshoppers 6-5 in Series Opener

CONEY ISLAND, NY - The Brooklyn Cyclones, the High-A affiliate of the New York Mets, scored early and held on late to fend off the Greensboro Grasshoppers 6-5 Tuesday night in the series opener of six at Maimonides Park, snapping a three-game skid.

Leading 1-0 into the second inning, the Cyclones rallied to cross four runs and take a 5-0 lead. Jose Peroza began the frame with a one-out solo blast. Jaylen Palmer tripled and scored on Shervyen Newton's RBI single before Matt Rudick screamed a line-drive double off of the right field wall to push the lead to 4-0. Stanley Consuegra's run-scoring ground out capped the rally. Jose Mena's solo home run in the fifth made it 6-0.
Greensboro chipped away at the deficit with five unanswered runs across the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to cut a 6-0 deficit to 6-5. With Francisco Acuna at second base, Endy Rodriguez and Abrahan Gutierrez ripped back-to-back doubles in the sixth. In the seventh, Jacob Gonzalez blasted a two-out, two-run double against Nolan Clenney to make it 6-4. Jackson Glenn ripped an RBI double in the eighth to make it 6-5, but Brooklyn reliever Dylan Hall responded with a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Nick Zwack earned his fourth consecutive victory, holding Greensboro to two runs over 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. Zwack entered with 24-consecutive scoreless innings and did not allow a run until the Grasshoppers plated a pair on three doubles in the sixth.

Tuesday's game marked the first-ever game between Brooklyn and Greensboro. The teams played in two different leagues until being aligned into High-A together in 2021.
Nick Zwack, who was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month in June, allowed his first run since June 12. Zwack's streak reached 29 scoreless innings before Greensboro snapped the stretch with two runs in the sixth.
Jose Peroza and Jose Mena each smashed their fourth home runs of the year, respectively.
