Rome, Georgia- Mason Auer led the offense with three hits but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (9-6, 50-30) dropped the first game of a six-game series with the Rome Braves (12-4, 48-34) 7-3 on Tuesday. The Hot Rods and Braves continue their series with a 12:05 PM CT first pitch on Wednesday at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome, Georgia.
The Hot Rods turned in the first run of the game in the third inning against Braves starter JJ Niekro, who was making his High-A debut. Johan Lopez led off with a double and went to third when Abiezel Ramirez grounded out to short. Michael Berglund grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Lopez to score, giving BG a 1-0 lead.
The Braves scored seven unanswered runs over the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings between Hot Rods starter Logan Workman and Patrick Wicklander, taking a 7-1 advantage. Bowling Green plated two runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit in a 7-3 series-opening loss.
Workman (2-3) allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts over 4.1 innings in a loss. Wicklander allowed two runs over his 2.2 innings on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Nomar Rojas threw a scoreless eighth while allowing a hit with a strikeout.
Notes: Lopez had his third multi-hit game of the year... He's reached base in 10 consecutive games... Auer had his fourth... It was his second three-hit game of the year... Simon extended his hit streak to four games... BG is 25-10 in games decided by four or more runs... They're also 9-6 in games that open a series...
