Indianapolis Indians News Release

Columbus starter Alex Graman shut down the Indianapolis Indians Thursday night as the Clippers defeated the Tribe, 3-1. Graman, the Huntingburg, Ind. native and product of Indiana State University, pitched seven scoreless innings picking up his 11th victory of the season.

The win pushes the Clippers' magic number to one as they attempt to claim the IL West Division. Columbus improves to 73-61, while the Indians fall to 60-74.

Columbus scored first on Shane Spencer's RBI single off Tribe starter Gary Glover in the first inning. Glover battled Graman all night, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out three.

The Clippers scored what proved to be the game winning run in the seventh inning on Andy Phillips' RBI double off Glover. Columbus added an insurance run off Tribe reliever Clint Weibl in the ninth inning on Phillips' RBI single to center field.

Indianapolis rallied for a run in the ninth on Jeff Liefer's RBI single to center field off Clippers' reliever Bret Pinz. Prinz then retired Chris Coste on a sharply hit liner to left to end the game, picking up his eighth save of the year.

The two teams meet Friday night at Victory Field with LHP Jeff Housman (1-1, 3.60) facing Columbus RHP Buddy Carlyle (7-5, 4.37).

QUOTES:

Bucky Dent, Columbus manager on the victory: "We're playing real well," said Dent. "We came into this month and the guys really turned it up. They've done a great job of playing with the intensity that they've had to play with. The pitching has pitched well, our bullpen has done a good job, everybody has turned their dial up and done a good job. The bullpen is very strong. Colter Bean has been outstanding for us. Padilla, Prinz, those guys have just been solid for us all year. In July we lost four guys out of the bullpen and we struggled a little bit. We got a couple of them back, settled down, got guys back into their roles and we've been fine since then."

NOTES:

Indianapolis is 20-45 when giving up 10 hits or more.

The Tribe is now 32-34 at home and 23-15 against IL West Division opponents.

Indianapolis is 7-8 against the Clippers.
