Columbus Clippers News Release
Castro on the Run
Bernie Castro's steal of of 2nd base last night, his 33rd of the season, ties him with Pawtucket's Jacoby Ellsbury and Rochester's Darnell McDonald for the League lead. Scott Pose was the last Clipper to lead the I.L. in stolen bases when he stole 47 in 1998. Castro has been successful on 16 of his 19 attempts since the All-Star break, including swiping four bases on 8/23 vs. Louisville. He is the first Clipper to steal as many as 30 bases in a season since Kerry Robinson nabbed 37 in 2000. Castro needs three more steals to crack the top 10 of most steals by a Clipper in a season.
Booker in the Books
Monday night Chris Booker notched his 30th save, the 3rd highest single season total in Clippers history. Booker's 30 saves also put him in 6th place all-time in franchise history. Columbus has now had a closer with at least 20 saves for the second year in a row after having a five year drought from 2001-05. Booker is the first Clipper to notch at least 30 saves since Jay Tessmer had 34 in 2000. Booker has been perfect in his last eight save opportunities. He has allowed just one run since the All-Star break with a 0.56 ERA (16.0IP, 1ER, 26K) converting all seven of his save chances.
Quite a First Impression
Beltran Perez picked up the win in last night's game, his first as a Clipper. Perez is the 37th pitcher Columbus has used this season and the 23rd different starter. He became the 7th Columbus player to win in his Clippers debut this season,
following Billy Traber (4/8 at Indianapolis), Anastacio Martinez (5/8 at Buffalo), John Lannan (6/22 vs. Ottawa), Jonathan Albaladejo (7/24 vs. Indianapolis), Josh Hall (7/28 vs. Pawtucket) and Matt Chico (8/22 vs. Louisville).
ALL BY MYSELF
With five games to go, Brandon Harper has a chance to be the only Clipper this year to be on the active roster every day of theseason. Five other players join him in being on the Clippers roster all season (Juan Brito, Larry Broadway, Bernie Castro, Chris Michalak and Abraham Nunez). However, Brito, Broadway, Michalak and Nunez spent time on the DL and Castro started the year on the temporarily inactive list.
Clippers set sails for Washington Ask any baseball man and he will tell you that a Triple-A ball club's number one job is to prepare a player for the major leagues. If that is the case, the Columbus Clippers get an A+ this season. A record 24 players have taken the field for both the Nationals and Clippers this season.
There have been eighteen pitchers (Matt Chico, Mike Bacsik, Saul Rivera, Jason Bergmann, Jason Simontacchi, Shawn Hill, Tim Redding, Micah Bowie, Jesus Colome, Levale Speigner, Billy Traber, Chris Schroder, John Lannan, Joel Hanrahan, Luis Ayala, Winston Abreu, Chris Booker and Jerome Williams) and six position players (Ryan Langerhans, Tony Batista, D'Angelo Jimenez, Kory Casto, Michael Restovich and Brandon Watson) to play for our State's capital and our Nation's capital this summer.
