JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Tennessee Smokies right-hander Trevor Clifton and two relievers combined for a two-hit shutout to defeat the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, 3-0, Monday night in front of 2,978 and canine companions at Bark in the Park presented by Standard Feed and Seed in the opener of a five-game series at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Tennessee (16-14) took the lead in the top of the second inning against Jacksonville right-hander Nick Neidert (2-4). Left fielder Charcer Burks hit a one-out single, and center fielder Trey Martin homered to left field for a 2-0 Smokies lead.
The Smokies extended the lead in the fifth inning, as shortstop Zack Short hit a two-out double to right field and scored on third baseman Jason Vosler's RBI single to right field. Neidert finished five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and one walk with a season-high seven strikeouts.
The Jumbo Shrimp (12-18) had their best threat against Clifton (3-3) in the first inning, after second baseman Isan Diaz drew a leadoff walk, and first baseman Eric Jagielo hit a two-out, ground-rule double to right field. Clifton struck out left fielder Cade Gotta to strand both runners. After that, Clifton allowed a second-inning, two-out walk to shortstop Chris Diaz, before retiring the next 13 batters he faced. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks with a season-high nine strikeouts.
Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Zech Lemond pitched two scoreless innings, before left-hander Jeff Kinley and right-hander Jose Pena each pitched a scoreless inning. Smokies right-hander Zack Effross pitched two scoreless innings, and right-hander James Norwood worked a scoreless ninth inning for his first save.
