
Clevlen's 3 RBI Powers Gwinnett to 5-1 Victory; End 7-Game Losing Streak, Avoid Sweep

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Charlotte Knights 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Knight's Castle in Fort Mill, SC. The Braves (3-8) end their seven-game losing streak and are 3-5 against the Knights this season. The Braves score all their runs in the top of the first off of Charlotte starter Lucas Harrell. Charlotte drops to 7-4 in the International League South.
It Was Over When: Gwinnett rightfielder Brent Clevlen stroked a bases loaded double to right in the top of the first. The shot scored Gregor Blanco, Barbaro Canizares and Freddie Freeman. Joe Thurston followed with a two-run homer to right, his second homerun of the season.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: James Parr picked up his first win of the season in three tries. His line: 5.0 IP, 5H, 0R/ER, 1BB, 5K'S. Mariano Gomez went: 2.0IP, 2H, 0R/ER, 0BB, 1K. Michael Dunn pitched the eighth: 1.0 IP, 2H, 1R/ER, 0BB, 0K. It was Dunn's first Triple A outing since returning to Gwinnett from Atlanta. Cory Gearrin worked the ninth: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R/ER, 0BB, 1K.
At the plate: Clevlen went 2-for-3 to up his average to .400 on the season. He added 3 RBI's. Thurston and Gregor Blanco each go 2-for-4. Thurston had two RBI's on the first inning homerun. Blanco scored a run. Barbaro Canizares and Freddie Freeman each accounted for one hit.
Knights Beat:
On the Mound: Lucas Harrell was tagged with his first loss of the season. His line: 5.1 IP, 7H, 5R/ER, 1BB, 1K. Harrell has given up nine first-inning runs to Gwinnett in two starts against the Braves. LHP Wes Whisler went: 2.2 IP, 1H, 0R/ER, 0BB, 0K. Greg Aquino pitched the ninth: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R/ER, 1BB, 1K.
At the plate: Dayan Viciedo and Jordan Danks both went 2-for-4. Stefan Gartrell went 1-for-3, knocking in the lone Charlotte run, an eighth-inning double off of the Braves' Michael Dunn.
On Deck: Gwinnett travels to Norfolk for game one of a four-game series at Harbor Park against the Tides, the Orioles' Triple-A club. First pitch set for 7:15 p.m. Braves RHP Chris Resop (0-1, 0.93 ERA) is scheduled to make his third start of the season. The Tides will counter with RHP Jake Arrieta (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
