Mench Home Run leads Chiefs to 3-1 Win

Allentown, PA - Kevin Mench's fifth inning three run home run propelled the Syracuse Chiefs to a 3-1 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Sunday afternoon. Roger Bernadina and Eric Bruntlett hit back to back one out singles in the Syracuse fifth, and Kevin Mench capped the frame with a shot over the left field fence for his first home run in American baseball since June 25th ,2008 as a member of the Syracuse Chiefs.

Luis Atilano (2-0) was the winning pitcher for Syracuse allowing one run and eight hits over six innings. He faced no more than five batters in an inning and forced IronPigs batters into two double plays. Lehigh Valley had only hit into three double plays coming into Sunday's game. Josh Wilkie pitched two scoreless innings facing just six batters. Joel Peralta finished the game for the Syracuse picking up his second save facing just four batters in the ninth inning.

The one Lehigh Valley run came in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Chris Duffy. The IronPigs left fielder notched his team leading 11th RBI to score Paul Hoover who had started the inning with a single. The only other inning when an IronPig reached past second base was in the fourth when Atilano got Dewayne Wise to ground out with runners at first and third.

Lefthander Brian Mazone (1-1) went six innings in the losing effort for Lehigh Valley. Despite striking out seven and walking none, he allowed three runs on six hits.

The Chiefs and IronPigs play game three of four Monday night at Coca Cola Park. JD Martin (1-0, 3.38) will start for Syracuse and Ryan Vogelsong (0-1, 2.89) will start for Lehigh Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
