Wichita Wingnuts News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - Brent Clevlen went 5-for-6 with five RBIs as the Wichita Wingnuts won their fifth straight Friday night, taking a 13-9 decision over the Texas AirHogs at Potter County Memorial Stadium.
For the second straight night, Wichita (11-11) grabbed the lead early, plating a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Martin Medina.
With two outs in the second the visitors tacked on three more as Griffin Russell (1-2) paid for back-to-back two-out walks, as Clevlen took him deep for a three-run shot, his team-leading sixth of the season.
The AirHogs pulled three back in their half of the inning, greeting Tim Brown (1-2) with four straight hits to start the inning.
With their lead trimmed to one, Wichita stretched their lead back to four in the fourth. Medina added his second RBI of the contest with a single, and Richard Prigatano added two more on a run-producing knock of his own.
The onslaught continued for the Wingnuts in the fifth, as T.J. Mittelstaedt launched a three-run homer to make it 11-3. The three RBIs give Mittelstaedt 20 on the season, a club high.
The AirHogs closed the gap to four with three in the fifth and one in the seventh, but Wichita put the game out of reach in the eighth. Harrison Kain knocked in a run with a single, and Clevlen capped off his huge night with an RBI double giving him the first five-hit and second five-RBI night of the season for the Wingnuts.
The win is Wichita's fifth in a row overall, and sixth straight road win. Their win and Laredo's loss to Lincoln also moves the Wingnuts to within a game and a half of the Lemurs in the South Division standings.
The Wingnuts and AirHogs continue their four-game series Saturday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium. Wichita will turn to right-hander Eddie Medina (0-3, 9.40), while Texas will counter with southpaw Ethan Carnes (2-0, 2.05). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
