Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers never quite recovered from a five-run first inning for the Morehead City Marlins, who took the game by a final count of 9-6 on Saturday night. Edenton (7-10) dropped to 1-2 in extra innings, and Morehead City (9-6) won its second straight against the Clams.

Branden Nunn took the loss for the Steamers. Nunn (0-1) surrendered three runs on three hits, including a homerun, in the eleventh.

Jose Peralta collected the win for the Marlins. Peralta (1-1) held Edenton scoreless through 1.1 innings, fanning one batter and allowing three hits. Brady Welsh recorded the final out of the game to pick up his first save of the season.

The Steamers got off to a bumpy start, committing two costly errors in the first inning. The Marlins also took advantage of four walks issued by starter Phil Graham, plating five unearned runs in the first frame.

The Clams plated a run of their own when Trey Hair came home on a wild pitch, but Romeo Cortina knocked a homer in the third to put Morehead City back up five.

Edenton charged back in the fourth with four runs. Thatcher Coleman was hit by a pitch with one out, and Jimbo Pernetti put two runners in scoring position with a double. A walk to Stefan Van Horn loaded the bases, and Ben Prada followed with a single to plate two runs. However, a miscue on the bases forced Van Horn to head to third when Prada charged for second, and the Steamers catcher was tagged out at bag three. In the next at bat, Aaron Aucker popped a two-run dinger to cut Morehead City's lead to 6-5 after four innings.

Trey Hair evened the score with his fourth homerun of the season with two gone in the seventh.

The teams remained locked at six apiece until the eleventh inning, when the Marlins broke things open. Tyler Weyenburg singled with one out and stole second to put one in scoring position. Christian Campbell scored Weyenburg with a two-out single, and Dominick Cammarata polished off the inning by knocking a ball over the tall wall in left.

The Edenton Steamers return to Historic Hicks Field on Monday, June 20, to take on the Asheboro Copperheads at 7 p.m. For more information, fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
