Grizzlies Win Thriller in the 11th
June 19, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Gastonia Grizzlies News Release
The Grizzlies won a thriller with a Sammy Taormina walk-off home run in the 11th inning! Gastonia led 3-1 in the 9th, but gave up a grand slam to Clay Dungan, falling behind by 2 runs. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the 9th, the Grizzlies would rally to tie with a series of base hits and walks, but couldn't get the winning run across, forcing extra innings. The score remained 5-5 until the bottome of the 11th when Taormina crushed a ball to deep right centerfield, went over the fence, and gave the Grizzlies the win. Gastonia moves to 6-9, while Savannah drops to 6-7.
Looking ahead on the schedule, the Grizzlies have a busy week on the way, travelling to Forest City on Monday, before returning to Sims Legion for a doubleheader with Savannah on Tuesday. Game 1 is set for 6pm... Gastonia then welcomes Forest City for a Noon game on Wednesday and wraps up the week with matchups against Martinsville, Edenton, and Wilmington. As for Savannah, the Bananas get a visit from the Wilson Tobs on Monday, prior to the Tuesday doubleheader in Gastonia.
