HAMPTON, Va.- The Peninsula Pilots defeated the Wilmington Sharks in a defensive struggle Sunday night, squeaking out a 2-1 victory and snapping the Sharks' seven-game win streak.

Will Shepherd (Liberty) batted in both runs for the Pilots and was one of only four Pilots to reach base on a hit, but his timely hitting was all the Pilots needed to pull out the win.

The Pilots got on the board in the third inning. Franco Guardascione (Seton Hall) and Cole Austin (West Virginia) reached base in consecutive at-bats to lead off the inning, with Guardascione reaching on a single and Austin reaching on a hit-by-pitch, marking the eighth consecutive game in which he has reached base. Both runners advanced to scoring position on a fielder's choice from Nick Walker (Old Dominion), and then Shepherd plated both on a single to left field. This turned out to be the only Pilots' only two runs of the night, but it was enough to win their fourth straight game.

On the other side of the ball, starter Chris Gau (Jacksonville), Paul Hall, Jr. (Virginia Tech), Devin Hemmerich (Norfolk State), and Michael Parmentier (Norfolk State) pitched a beauty of a game. Gau threw five scoreless innings, striking out two batters, giving up only four hits, and extending the Pilots record to 3-0 when he starts. Hall pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Pilots, and Hemmerich threw 2 1/3 before giving way to Parmentier to get the save for the Pilots, coming in with one out in the ninth inning and retiring the Sharks' final two batters with the tying run at second.

It took the Sharks until the ninth inning to get on the scoreboard. Ward Coleman (Davidson) singled to left field with one out, and then Ryan Jeffers (UNC-Wilmington), pinch hitting for Matthew Meeder (Mercer), doubled home Coleman with a shot up the left field line. Alas, this run would be the only offense mustered by the Sharks on the night, as Parmentier came in and retired the final two batters.

The Pilots host a double header against Morehead City on Monday for Methodist Men's Night. For more information regarding the season, please visit www.peninsulapilots.com.
