Edenton Steamers News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, NC - The Edenton Steamers ousted the Morehead City Marlins in a nail-biter that ended 2-1 on Monday night. Edenton (6-5) snapped a two-game skid, handing Morehead City (7-4) its first home loss of the season.
Andrew Hinckley collected the win in his second start for the Teal and Black. Hinckley (1-0) hurled five innings, surrendering one run on six hits while fanning seven batters. Kade Granier got his first save, stranding two Marlins on base in the final frame.
The Clams drew first blood in the top of the second. Aaron Aucker connected for a one-out single and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Two at bats later, Jimbo Pernetti doubled in Aucker to give Edenton a 1-0 advantage.
The Steamers doubled their lead with another run in the fourth. Aucker started things off again with a leadoff double. A wild pitch put Aucker on third, and Pernetti plated the run with a groundball to second.
Morehead City cut the Steamer lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Holbrook led off with a triple to right-center, and Matthew Batten knocked in the Marlins only run with a single in the next at bat.
The pitchers on both sides owned the rest of the game. Both staffs combined for 11 strikeouts over the final five innings.
The Edenton Steamers finish up their eight-game road stretch with a doubleheader at Peninsula tomorrow night. The first game is set to start at 6 p.m. The Clams' next home game is on Wednesday night when they host the Morehead City Marlins at 7 p.m. For more information, fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
