HAMPTON, Va. - The Peninsula Pilots snapped a two-game losing skid with a 10-1 triumph over the Holly Springs Salamanders on Monday night at War Memorial Stadium.

After falling in back-to-back games against Edenton and Wilson, the Pilots returned to their winning ways using a balanced offensive attack and superb pitching on the mound.

The Peninsula Pilots continued their trend of scoring first as they plated two runs in the second inning to take an early lead. Andrew Yacyk (Liberty) knocked a one-out double to left field. In Charlie Cody's (Virginia) first plate appearance with the Pilots, he reached on an error that allowed Yacyk to score. After another error by the Salamanders defense put runners on the corners, a fielder's choice by Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) plated Cody for the second run of the inning.

The Pilots tacked on two more runs in the third inning with Yacyk's third home run of the season. Darian Carpenter (VCU) reached on an error and came around to score on Yacyk's shot over the left field wall.

Holly Springs found the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Dillon Stewart (UNC Greensboro) led off the inning with a double to left-center followed by a single by Devin Ruiz (UNC Greensboro) that put runners on the corner. The Salamanders plated their first run on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, the Salamanders attempted to score another run but a strong throw by Nick Walker (Old Dominion) nabbed a runner trying to advance to third and negated a run.

Peninsula tacked on two more in the fourth inning when Cole Austin (West Virginia) tripled to lead off the inning and came around to score on Guardascione's single. A single by Walker advanced Guardascione into scoring position and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Will Shepherd (Liberty).

Cole Austin (West Virginia) drove in another run in the fifth inning as he singled to right field to score Carpenter to push the lead to 7-1.

In the seventh inning, Kyle Wrighte (William & Mary) made his Pilots debut and was greeted with a pitch that hit his shoulder. Back-to-back singles by Carpenter and Drake McNamara (Southern Indiana), who also made his Pilots debut, loaded the bases. Austin added another run for the Pilots as he scored Wrighte with a sacrifice fly. Guardascione added two more runs with a triple to right-center.

On the mound, Josh Winder (VMI) moved to 2-0 on the season as he struck out a season-high nine in five sparkling innings of work. The right-hander gave up only a run while scattering four hits and walking three. Devin Hemmerich (Norfolk State) followed suit with three shutout innings and four strikeouts. Alex Mauricio (Norfolk State) pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.
