City Council Continues Progress Towards New Spectator Facility

May 10, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs would like to thank all the supporters who came out en masse to last night's city council meeting to show their support for a new St. Catharines Spectator Facility.

As Mayor McMullan mentioned at the council meeting, the amount of support shown for last night's recommendation was impressive. From the packed council chambers, as well as the full overflow room, to the 47 e-mails he received in support of the new Spectator Facility (compared to 5 against), the Mayor said he has seldom seen this type of response to an issue. For that, we thank you all.

At the meeting, city council voted 11-2 in favour of the recommendation, which approved in principle a new St. Catharines Spectator and Entertainment Facility and did several other things, including giving staff the authorization to request proposals from Event Management Groups to provide advice on design and planning of the facility. A full list of the recommendation can be found in the agenda from last night's meeting, which is available by clicking here.

While the recommendation is certainly a key step towards making a new Spectator Facility a reality, it is far from a done deal. The facility was approved in principal, but there are many steps that must be accomplished before anything is finalized.

What the recommendation last night essentially does is keep the ball rolling and give council the chance to continue doing their due dilligence, as everyone continues to try and make a new St. Catharines Spectator and Entertainment Facility happen.

There is definitely still a long way to go before a new spectator facility is a reality. However, last night showed the council is doing what they can to continue to try and find a way to make this facility happen.

We would like to once again thank everyone that sent an e-mail to their councillors, or attended the council meeting last night for their support and encourage everyone to keep it up! Also below you will once again find a list of the e-mail addresses for all of the St. Catharines City Councillors for anyone who would like to e-mail them and thank them for their support of last night's recommendation.
