Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - Game five in the Rogers OHL Championship Series went this evening at the Hershey Centre. The series was tied at two games apiece when the puck dropped tonight. Thanks to an offensive outburst, the Majors won a spirited affair by a score of 7-3, and took a 3-2 series lead.

The Majors started with a jump and had the early edge. At 6:57 of the first Rob Flick and Chris DeSousa made a great forecheck and forced a turnover behind the Attack net. Desousa picked up the loose puck and tried a wrap around and the puck slid through the crease to Flick, who got his eighth of the post season. The Majors seemed to be gathering momentum, just two minutes later Justin Shugg, who has been the hottest Major this post season, put the Majors up by two after a shot that evaded Michael Zador's glove hand. After six shots and four saves, Zador's evening was over as Scott Stacjer came on in relief. On the second powerplay of the night for the Majors they built on their lead once more. Michael D'Orazio blasted a point shot wide that bounced to a waiting Maxim Kitsyn who made an impressive one time backhander that beat Stajcer to the short side and the Majors had there sixth powerplay goal of the series. Mississauga wasn't done. Cizikas pulled off a great clear out of the zone and decided to shoot on a two on one, the puck went off Stajcer and Smith-Pelly buried the rebound. Just when it looked like the Majors were going to rout the Attack, Owen Sound pulled back within three. The goal came at 17:06 when Jesse Blacker let a point shot go that Jarrod Maidens tipped and beat JP Anderson. The Attack scored once more at 19:08 when Keevin Cutting beat Anderson with assists going to Garrett Wilson and Cameron Brace. Shots on goal at the end of the first were 16-14 in favour of the Attack, although the Majors led 4-2.

The Majors began the second period killing an early penalty and the game tightened up after a back and forth first period. Both teams seemed to have lost some of the scoring magic in the second. Shugg put a snap shot that rang the post as he almost tallied his second goal of the night. The Attack also put one off the post when Andrew Shaw fought off tough checking from Dylan DeMelo and put a one timer off Anderson then the post and out. Neither team were able to bury their chances and the second period came to a close with the Majors still leading the Attack 4-2, and outshooting Owen Sound 12-9.

Owen Sound cut the lead to one early in the third period. After a penalty to captain Casey Cizikas which the Attack took advantage of. Robby Mignardi scored his 15th goal of the playoffs on the powerplay, as the assists went to Jesse Blacker and Joey Hishon. After some pressure deep in Majors territory for a lot of the third, Devante Smith-Pelly found a loose puck and sprung Shugg on a breakaway who deked backhand and went five-hole on Stajcer. The goal came with just over eight minutes left in the third and gave the Majors another two goal lead. Shortly after the Attack took an interference penalty and Smith-Pelly sealed the deal for the Majors with a powerplay goal, his second of the night. For good measure Smith-Pelly tallied another powerplay goal on a nice tip in on a pass from Shugg. Shugg and Smith-Pelly dominated the game with five goals between the two. Shots on goal in the third period were 9-5 Majors as the double blue successfully defended home ice.

The Majors will now look to wrap up the J. Ross Robertson Trophy as Rogers OHL Champions this Thursday when they travel to Owen Sound for game six. If necessary, game seven is back in Mississauga on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

These two teams will be back at the Hershey Centre beginning on May 20 for the MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament. A weekday ticket and Championship game package has just been released where fans can get tickets to two weekday games and the Championship game for just $225.00. Call 905-502-7788 x. 1 for details.
