Cincinnati, Stockton off to quick starts
Published on November 5, 2012 under ECHL (ECHL) News Release
The Cincinnati Cyclones remain the lone ECHL team to not have a regulation loss this season, as they have started the campaign 6-0-2. It marks the first time in club history that the Cyclones have recorded at least one point in eight straight games to start a season.
Last week, Cincinnati recorded three wins, all by one goal, improving to 5-0-2 in games decided by one goal.
The Cyclones opened the week with a 3-2 win against Kalamazoo on Wednesday. Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Cincinnati got a penalty shot goal from Taylor Aronson at the 7:40 mark, and the game-winner from Garrett Wilson with just 38 seconds left in regulation.
Friday in Kalamazoo, the Cyclones and K-Wings engaged in a back-and-forth affair, culminating with three goals scored in a two-minute span late in the third period. Cincinnati took a 4-2 lead late in the second period on a Jonathan Hazen goal, only to the see the K-Wings tie the score on back-to-back power play goals 1:15 apart in the third period. But, just 1:32 after Kalamazoo tied it, Mike Embach scored his first goal of the season at 17:12 to lift the Cyclones to the win.
Cincinnati ended its dramatic week with a 2-1 overtime win against Wheeling on Saturday. Hazen scored the Cyclones' lone goal of regulation at 14:50 of the second period, and Cam Reid netted the game-winner just 21 seconds into overtime. Brian Foster made 30 saves to pick up the win in goal.
Foster has played in all eight games for the Cyclones this season, and leads the league with six wins to go along with a 2.40 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage.
It's been a balanced attack offensively for Cincinnati as no Cyclone ranks among the top 41 scorers in the league. Rookie David Pacan leads the team with eight points (3g-5a), while Wilson tops the club with four goals.
This week, the Cyclones head south for a pair of games, visiting Greenville for games on Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, in the Western Conference, the Stockton Thunder are off to their best start since the 2006-07 season with a 7-1-1 mark through nine games. Stockton has gone 7-0-1 in its last eight games after losing its season opener. The Thunder won three games in three days over the weekend, outscoring their opposition 18-6 in the process.
On Friday, the Thunder defeated Bakersfield 6-1. Justin Maylan (2g-1a) and Harrison Reed (2a) posted multiple points in the win, while Cody Reichard recorded his second win of the season with 19 saves.
Stockton kept the offensive firepower going on Saturday in a 7-4 win over Alaska. Philippe Cornet opened the scoring 6:27 into the contest, and added three assists, while Toni Rajala continued his strong start to the season with three points (2g-1a). Tyler Bunz earned the win in goal, making 28 saves.
The Thunder ended the weekend with a 5-1 win against the Aces on Sunday. Five different Stockton players tallied goals in the win, while Reed (1g-2a) Rajala (1g-1a) and Maylan (1g-1a) enjoyed multiple-point games. Bunz once again recorded the win with 30 saves.
Bunz has won his last four starts, and is tied for second in the league with five wins and is sixth with a 2.12 goals-against average. Rajala is tied for the team lead in scoring, and is tied for second among ECHL rookies, with 11 points (6g-5a), all of which have come during his current six-game point streak. Fellow first-year player Maylan is tied for fourth among rookies with nine points (5g-4a).
Stockton hits the ice just once this week, making its first visit to the Cow Palace to meet San Francisco on Friday.
