Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The city of Cincinnati popped up on the NHL landscape last night (June 6) when Anaheim won the Stanley Cup. Eleven former Cincinnati (American Hockey League) players were members of that championship team and will have their names engraved in the 115-year old trophy.
Tonight, four players who participated with the Cincinnati Cyclones during 2006-07 will have a chance to claim an AHL championship trophy. The Hamilton Bulldogs, the AHL affiliate of the Cyclones, play game five of their best of seven series with the Hershey Bears tonight. The Bulldogs, with a three games to one lead, have a chance to capture their first-ever Calder Cup.
Center Cory Urquhart a second round draft choice of the Montreal Canadiens in 2003, has appeared in 30 regular season games and 18 of 21playoff games for Hamilton. Defenseman Jon Gleed and forwards Mathieu Aubin and Greg Stewart have been recalled from the Cyclones during the playoffs and are with the Bulldogs right now.
Ironically, another Cyclones player, Hershey goaltender Frederick Cassivi has appeared in all 18 games for the Bears so far this postseason. Cassivi is 13-5 in the postseason with a 2.65 goals against average.
"It's great to see so many former players from Cincinnati enjoying success in pro hockey," Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "This is a town that has enjoyed hockey success and will be seeing top-flight players in the future as well."
Another Stanley Cup name, former Cyclone Gilbert Dionne, had his number retired by the Cincinnati club on Dec. 2, in a game against Dayton. Dionne was a member of the 1992-93 Montreal Canadiens squad that captured the trophy.
All together, seven former Cyclones players have had their name placed on the Stanley Cup. Those players include:
Craig Adams (Carolina, 2005-06; with Cyclones 1999-2000 and 2000-01)
Dan Boyle (Tampa Bay, 2003-04; with Cyclones 1997-98)
Erik Cole (Carolina, 2005-06; with Cyclones 1999-2000 and 2000-01)
Gilbert Dionne (Montreal, 1992-93; with Cyclones 1997-98 through 2000-01)
Paul DiPietro (Montreal, 1992-93; with Cyclones 1996-97)
Eldon 'Pokey' Reddick (Edmonton 1989-90; with Cyclones 1993-94)
Corey Schwab (New Jersey, 2002-03; with Cyclones 1992-93)
In addition to the seven players, two former coaches also have their names on the Stanley Cup:
Don Jackson (Edmonton 1983-84 & 1984-85-player; with Cyclones as coach 1994-95)
Ron Smith (Carolina 2005-06-scout; with Cyclones as coach 1995-2001)
After one season without any professional hockey in the Queen City (2005-06), the Cyclones returned to the ECHL in May 2006 and in their first season back, posted a 37-29-6 record (.556 winning percentage). The Cyclones led the North Division for 90 days (Dec. 23 through March 23) and took third place in the division standings, one point behind Toledo and three points behind Dayton, which advanced to the Kelly Cup finals.
Tickets for the 2007-08 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. Ticket packages start as low as $66, call the Cyclones at 513-421-PUCK (7825) for more details. The season starts on Friday, October 19 when the Dayton Bombers come to U.S. Bank Arena.
