Wausau Woodchucks News Release
LA CROSSE-August 4, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks and the La Crosse Loggers battled all night, but it was the Loggers that came out on top, winning game one of a three-game series 5-4.
The Loggers got the scoring started early, as they got a lead-off double in the first from Louie Lechich. Lechich came around to score on an RBI-groundout by Jimmy Bosco, giving the Loggers a 1-0 lead.
The Woodchucks didn't hesitate in scoring the tying run, however, as they got on the scoreboard in the top of the second. With Cody Regis on third base, Aaron Gates hit a hard-hit ball towards first baseman Corey Levier that he misplayed, allowing Regis to score, tying the game at one.
La Crosse took the lead right back in the second. For the second consecutive inning, the Loggers got a lead-off double, this time from Bobby Juan. Juan scored later in the inning on a throwing error by Robbie De La Cruz, but the run was earned, giving the Loggers a 2-1 lead.
The score stayed the same until the sixth inning, when Carlos Escobar, Jr., bombed a pitch to left field that cleared the wall by more than ten feet, tying the game up at two. It was Escobar's third home run of the season.
Justin Burns got the start for the Woodchucks only three days after throwing seven shutout innings against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters on Sunday, and he was effective once again. He threw seven innings, allowing only two runs on five hits and two walks. Burns threw 93 more pitches, putting him at 177 over the last four days.
The score stayed tied at two until the eighth inning. After reliever Jake Long got the first two outs, he allowed a walk and a single to Andrew Knapp before Bobby Juan hit a three-run home run to give the Loggers the 5-4 lead.
The Woodchucks would not go down easily, though. In the ninth, the âChucks got back-to-back hits from Cody Regis and Aaron Gates, allowing Regis to score and making it a two-run game. After Robbie De La Cruz reached on an error, Danny Susdorf lined a base-hit to center, scoring Gates. With De La Cruz on second, the Woodchucks decided to pinch run with pitcher Ryan Iverson. Garrett Yrigoyen lined a ball to center, Iverson was waived around third, and thrown out at the plate. After the out, the âChucks still had the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on first. Escobar, Jr., crushed a ball to left field, but it was caught at the wall by Bosco, ending the game, 5-4.
The Woodchucks fell to 11-17 on the season, while the Loggers improved to 16-11. The two teams will face off again tomorrow night at 7:05 in Copeland Park.
