Christopoulos Earns Player of the Week Honors

December 16, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

Urbandale (IA) At the conclusion of Saturday's win it seemed only a formality and on Monday afternoon the United States Hockey League made it official by naming the Des Moines Buccaneers' Billy Christopoulos the Goaltender of the Week.

Christopoulos was in net for both games last weekend as the Buccaneers defeated the Green Bay Gamblers 2-1 in a shootout on Friday and then 3-0 on Saturday. On Friday he made 29 saves through overtime and another five in the shootout. Then on Saturday, he had 32 saves to earn the team's first shutout this season and his second in his two-year USHL career.

In fact, the only regulation goal he allowed all weekend came after an apparent goaltender interference penalty on Friday, thus only a controversial goal prevented him from consecutive shutouts.

The Raleigh, NC native is 5-8-0 with a 2.84 goals against average and an impressive .924 save percentage. In two years with the Buccaneers, he has a combined 18-31-0 mark 3.54 goals against and .901 save percentage.

Christopoulos is the first Buccaneers' player to earn one of the league's weekly awards and it comes as the team is playing its best hockey of the season. Des Moines (10-12-2) is on a five-game point streak (4-0-1) which is their longest since March 2011.

The Buccaneers are now enjoying a well earn earned week off for the holidays before returning for a December 27th home game against Cedar Rapids.

The Des Moines Buccaneers are in their 34th consecutive season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
