CARSON, Calif. (Monday, July 17, 2006) - Chivas USA gears up for an exciting week, as it faces the Colorado Rapids on Thursday in an important league tie before playing Mexican rivals Club América on Sunday at The Home Depot Center. With third place on the line in the Western Conference, the Red-and-White face the Colorado Rapids at INVESCO Field at Mile High at 5:00 p.m. PT (6:00 p.m. MT) on Thursday, July 20 (TV: LIVE on MLS Direct Kick, TAPE-DELAYED on Azteca America, Sunday, July 23 @ 11:00 a.m. PT; Radio: KTNQ 1020 AM Univision Radio; Web: MLSLIVE.tv). Then on Sunday, Chivas USA hosts controversial Mexican side Club América at 4:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center in the second âInterClásico', presented by La Curacao. CLUB AMÃRICA COMING TO TOWN: On March 24, 2005, Chivas USA played an exhibition in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, against Mexican powerhouse Club América. The Red-and-White came away with a 1-0 victory in the first-ever InterClásico. This Sunday, Club América comes to Los Angeles for a rematch starting at 4:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. The game, which is Bonus Game A for season ticket holders and media parking passes, will not be televised and is the only appearance that Club América will make in Los Angeles this year. The game is guaranteed to have a winner; the two teams are playing for a trophy so if the game ends in a tie, penalty kicks will decide the winner. CHIVAS USA TO FACE RAPIDS IN DENVER: Going into Thursday night's game, both Chivas USA and the Colorado Rapids have 24 points and are tied for third place in the Western Conference. The two teams faced off in Denver on June 21 and ended tied at one in a hard-fought game, but both sides will be expecting victory on Thursday. The only other match between the teams so far this season was an exciting 4-1 win for Chivas USA in The Home Depot Center on June 3. The match, which will shown tape-delayed nationwide on Azteca América on Sunday, July 23 at 11:00 a.m. PT, is part of an international doubleheader also featuring San LuÃs vs. Club América, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. PT (8:30 p.m. MT).
GAME AT FC DALLAS MOVED TO SEPT. 13: Please note that Chivas USA's second game of the season at FC Dallas, originally scheduled for Wednesday, August 16, has been changed to Wednesday, September 13. Kickoff time is at 7:30 p.m. CT, and the game will still be shown live by FSN PRIME TICKET and broadcast on radio via KTNQ 1020 AM Univision Radio.
SPECIAL 100-HOUR GAME: On Saturday, Chivas USA, its "Fundación Chivas de Corazón USA" and the City of Bell Gardens announced a celebratory 100-hour soccer game, featuring teams from Chivas and the Rest of the World, that will commemorate the 100 year history of Club Deportivo Guadalajara. The event will take place in the new Bell Gardens Sports Center, starting at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, and ending on Sunday, August 13, at 5:00 p.m., at which point the new 10-million dollar sports complex, a joint project between the City of Bell Gardens and Chivas USA, will be inaugurated. Former Club América player Paco Uribe will be the honorary captain for the Rest of the World team, while the Chivas squad will be captained by former Chivas Guadalajara and Chivas USA goalkeeper MartÃn 'El Pulpo' Zúñiga.
BARCELONA COMING TO LOS ANGELES: UEFA Champions League winner and Spanish champion FC Barcelona began training in Spain on Monday, July 17 in preparation for the 2006-2007 season. The squad will get its World Cup players back on August 1 before its trip to the United States. Individual tickets are now on sale to see Barcelona in Los Angeles on August 6 to face Club Deportivo Guadalajara at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Ronaldinho, Messi, Márquez and Eto'o will be among the stars that will face the Mexican squad in the doubleheader that will also include Chivas USA vs. the New England Revolution, starting at 4:00 p.m. PT. 'SUPER CLÃSICO' ENDS IN A DRAW: The third âHonda Super Clasico' of the 2006 season ended in a 0-0 tie between Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, July 15 at The Home Depot Center. Both teams had plenty of chances, with Sacha Kljestan and Juan Pablo GarcÃa both hitting the post for Chivas. With the shutout, Preston Burpo regained the league-lead in goals against average, with a miniscule 0.83 GAA. The âHonda Super Clasico' this year has yielded one win for the Galaxy, one for Chivas, and now a draw, and the series will be decided in the last meeting between the two teams this season on September 30 at The Home Depot Center.
VIRGEN MAKES APPEARANCE AT THE HOME DEPOT CENTER: The Virgen of Zapopan completed her journey through Southern California with a special mass at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, immediately before the âHonda Super Clasico.' The service, which featured dancers, drummers and singers, was attended by hundreds of fan faithful, and was held in the tennis stadium at The Home Depot Center.
GUADALAJARA UPDATE: Club Deportivo Guadalajara continues its preparation for the second leg of its Copa Libertadores match with Vélez Sarsfield this week with a match against Celtic FC, of Glasgow, Scotland, in New York on Friday. Chivas dominated but couldn't find the net in a 0-0 draw against the Scottish champions. Guadalajara is coming off a 4-1 win against Tecos in a preseason match on Saturday, July 8, and will face off against Velez on July 20 in Buenos Aires in the quarterfinals of South America's biggest club tournament.
