FRISCO, Texas (Monday, July 17, 2006) - Major League Soccer announced today that FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper was selected as the MLS Player of the Week for Week 16. Cooper scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in his team's come-from-behind, 3-2 win over Chicago on Saturday. He is the first Dallas player to be named the Player of the Week this season, and the first to garner the award since Carlos Ruiz did so for his two-goal performance against D.C. United in Week 9 of the 2005 MLS season.
On Saturday, Cooper helped the Hoops get on the scoreboard in the eighth minute when he set up Ramon Nunez for the game's first goal. Nunez took three touches before firing a right-footed shot that beat Chicago keeper Zach Thornton from 20 yards out, giving Dallas an early 1-0 advantage.
With the game tied 2-2, Cooper put Dallas back in front for good in the 80th minute with a snap header from the center of the box. In a play that was created from nine consecutive passes, midfielder Arturo Alvarez deftly chipped the ball into the box for Cooper who placed a header past Thornton for his seventh goal of the season. That goal was also Cooper's team-best fourth game-winner of the year and his second in as many games against the Fire.
Cooper edged Real Salt Lake's Jeff Cunningham and Chicago Fire's Andy Herron for the honor. The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
