Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, July 24, 2008) - Chivas USA midfielder Jorge Flores has been called up by United States Under-20 National Team coach Thomas Rongen for the team's upcoming participation in the Milk Cup, an annual youth tournament held in Northern Ireland. The team will train in Northern Ireland before playing matches against host Northern Ireland on July 28 and Wales on July 30. Also competing in the Milk Cup will be Belgium, Chile and Israel, with a playoff round and the final set to take place on Friday, Aug. 1.
For Chivas USA this season, Flores has played in six matches (starting three), scoring three goals. The Anaheim, Calif. native has been with the U.S. U-20's for the Copa Chivas in Mexico in January and the Campos Verdes International Tournament in Portugal in April. In May, Flores was with the team for a pair of games in England against English Premier League reserve teams, where he had a goal and an assist. Flores has played in more games with the U-20 National Team this year than any other player, and was called up for the team's most recent match, against Mexico, but had to miss the game due to an ankle injury.
The Milk Cup was established in 1983 and quickly progressed into one of the most prestigious youth soccer tournaments in the world. The event, always held in the last week of July, has attracted youth national and club teams from 56 countries around the world, including squads from top European teams such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Milk Cup alumni include the Los Angeles Galaxy's David Beckham and two of his fellow England National Team members, Wayne Rooney and Joe Cole.
Chivas USA has two road games, on Aug. 2 at Chicago and Aug. 9 at Kansas City, before returning home for the third and final Honda Super Clásico of the regular season. The âBattle for L.A.' takes place on Thursday, Aug. 14, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
