CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, June 8, 2014) - Led by striker Erick "Cubo" Torres' team-high ninth goal of the season, Chivas USA secured a point as the visiting side Sunday evening with a 1-1 draw in the SuperClásico against the LA Galaxy. Torres put the Rojiblancos up with his 16th career goal, which tied him with Cuauhtémoc Blanco for the all-time Major League Soccer lead among Mexican-born players. The Galaxy equalized in the first half on a Gyasi Zardes header for the sides to split points at the StubHub Center.

With his appearance on Sunday, Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy surpassed former club standouts Jonathan Bornstein and Francisco "Panchito" Mendoza's club record of 123 all-time games played.

The Red-and-White generated a pair of dangerous looks beginning in the sixth minute on Leandro Barrera 's cross from the left side intended for Torres as he made his run near the penalty spot. However, Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo arrived in time to break up the threat. Four minutes later, midfielder Martin Rivero pushed the ball up the middle of the attacking third to set up Barrera on his left. Barrera then got off a left-footed strike on frame that Penedo was able to collect.

Chivas broke through in the 20th minute to go up 1-0 when Rivero played Torres a short pass inside the box for the forward to create enough space for himself outside the six-yard box and beat Penedo to his right.

Galaxy responded in the 35th minute to pull the match even at 1-1 when Zardes got on the end of a Marcelo Sarvas cross from the right corner of the box. Zardes was able to place his header to the back of the net from six yards out near the far post for the sides to head into halftime locked at one.

As the high-paced match continued into the early stages of the second half, the Rojiblancos looked to reclaim the lead and went to their bench to bring on their first substitution of the contest in attacker Kristopher Tyrpak. In the 71st minute, Rivero worked the ball up the middle once more and threaded a pass to Mauro Rosales on the right wing. The midfielder then chipped a ball over the top to Torres inside the box but the Galaxy defense was able to disrupt the play and deny the opportunity.

Both sides created chances in their attacking third in the final part of regulation, but it would be the defenses that would eventually have their say by remaining stout and not allowing the game-winner. Chivas brought on their final two subs to help keep the midfield fresh and preserve the result before heading into the league break.

Chivas USA now turn their attention to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, as they travel to North Carolina to face the Carolina RailHawks to begin their tournament run in the Fourth Round. The match will mark the club' second consecutive meeting in cup play over the last two years and will kick off at 5 p.m. (PT) at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday.
