Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, May 8, 2014) - Chivas USA announced today that the club has acquired Honduras National Team midfielder Marvin Chavez from the Colorado Rapids and forward Ryan Finley from the Columbus Crew. In exchange, the Red-and-White sent striker Luke Moore to the Rapids and their conditional second round pick in the 2016 Major League Soccer SuperDraft to the Crew. Moore was subsequently traded to Toronto FC.
"We are very happy to add Marvin Chavez and Ryan Finley to our club as they will immediately bolster our attack," said Chivas USA Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera. "Chavez is one of the best wide midfielders in the League and is very versatile at creating scoring opportunities. Finley will fit perfectly in our plan as a center forward, as his mobility and approach to the game will support and complement Erick Torres' skills up top."
Chavez and Finley will join the Red-and-White ahead of the team's Week 10 match against the Rapids on Sunday. Following the Week 11 fixture against FC Dallas, Chavez will join the Honduras National Team in Miami as he has been called up to the preliminary 23-man roster in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Honduras midfielder will then participate in the Road to Brazil 2014 games, where Los Catrachos will face Turkey in Washington D.C. on May 29 and Israel on June 1 in Houston.
Chavez entered MLS in 2009 with FC Dallas and has recorded 12 tallies to go along with 20 assists in 98 career games. Chavez played two seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes beginning in 2012, where he recorded a career-high 13 assists while helping the 'Quakes capture the 2012 Supporters Shield. The 30-year-old was acquired by Colorado via trade during the off-season and played in two matches thus far in the 2014 campaign.
While with the Honduras National Team, Chavez made his international debut in 2006 and has gone on to record 37 caps and four goals since then, competing in qualifying matches for the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups as well as the 2009 and 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cups.
Finley, who was most recently on loan with USL-PRO side Dayton Dutch Lions, came into the League as a rookie in 2013, recording a goal and one assist in 14 games with the Crew. A native of New Jersey, the 23-year-old forward was drafted with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft after finishing his final two collegiate years at University of Notre Dame. Prior to enrolling at South Bend, the six-foot forward played at Duke University for two years.
As a senior, Finley played in all 22 matches for the Fighting Irish and finished the season as the NCAA's second-leading scorer with 21 tallies. Finley's accomplishments earned him NSCAA All-American First Team honors while becoming a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist. The forward was also named the Big East Conference Offensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Big East First Team.
At the international level, Finley was a member of the Under-17 U.S. Men's National Team in 2006 and was later selected to be a part of the U-18 National Team. Additionally, the young striker spent two years in the U.S. Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla.
Chivas USA head to Colorado on Sunday to face the Rapids in a nationally-televised Western Conference clash scheduled to kick off at noon (PT) on UniMás. The match will mark the first leg of the three-game season series against the Rapids and the first regular season meeting between Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera and his former team.
