Colorado Rapids News Release
The Colorado Rapids acquired 22-year-old American defender Gale Agbossoumonde from Toronto FC on Thursday, following a transaction in which Colorado sent midfielder Marvin Chávez to Chivas USA. Agbossoumonde, a central defender who has made an appearance with the U.S. National Team, has been with TFC since the start of 2013, having also played for clubs in Portugal, Sweden and Germany.
In a pair of transactions completed on Thursday, the Rapids sent Chávez to Chivas USA in exchange for forward Luke Moore, who was then immediately dealt to Toronto FC for Agbossoumonde.
"We're excited to welcome Gale to our squad, as he's a talented young player who can add depth to our back line," said Paul Bravo, the Rapids VP of Soccer Operations. "He has a great deal of experience for a player of his age, both on the club and national level. We want to thank Marvin for his hard work during his short time with us, and wish him the best of luck with Chivas USA."
Agbossoumonde was a regular for the U.S. Under-20 National Team from 2008-2011, and played all three matches for the squad at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt at just 17 years old. He made his only appearance to date with the full national team on Nov. 17, 2010 against South Africa. On the club level, he has played for lower division American clubs Miami FC and Carolina RailHawks, as well as Braga (Portugal), Djurgardens (Sweden), and Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany). Born in Togo, Agbossoumonde moved to the U.S. at the age of eight. He made 13 appearances (12 starts) for Toronto FC in 2013.
Chávez, 30, made two appearances for Colorado in 2014 after being acquired in an offseason trade with the San Jose Earthquakes for Atiba Harris. The Honduran attacking midfielder has played 98 matches in his MLS career for Dallas, San Jose and Colorado (78 starts), scoring 12 goals and adding 20 assists.
