Chirinos and Perez Homer in 10-4 Finale Loss to Delmarva

ZEBULON - Jesus Chirinos homered in the second, Hedbert Perez hit a two-run blast in the fifth, and Jeferson Quero went 3-for-5 with two doubles, but the Delmarva Shorebirds rallied late with a four run eighth while finishing off a 10-4 victory versus the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. The loss dropped the Mudcats (9-12, 43-44) into a 3-3 series split with the visiting Shorebirds (8-13, 29-54).
Jeferson Figueroa started for the Mudcats and allowed a run in each of the first two innings before seeing his club bounce back with two runs in the second to tie the game at 2-2. Chirinos brought in the first Carolina run with a solo home run, while a RBI single from Jheremy Vargas tied the game at 2-2.
The Shorebirds came right back though with a three-run third that gave them the lead again at 5-2. A two-run home run for Perez (his 11th of the season) cut that lead to 5-4, but Delmarva would tack on one more in the seventh before breaking it open with four in the eighth while taking the finale 10-4.
Figueroa (0-6) ended up pitching through the fifth while matching a career-high with eight strikeouts, but would also allow five runs on six hits while taking the loss. Miguel Segura eventually took over in the sixth where he would work a scoreless frame before giving up one in the seventh and four in the eighth. Segura also gave up five runs, but did so on four hits over three innings. Miguel Guerrero eventually finished the game by working through a scoreless ninth for Carolina.
Conor Grady started for Delmarva and allowed Carolina's two runs in the second before leaving after the third with two runs, four hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Dylan Heid followed and allowed the Perez homer in the fifth, but gave up just the two runs overall on two hits over two innings. Miguel Padilla (1-1) worked a scoreless sixth and seventh while earning the win. Relievers Hector Perez and Yaqui Rivera then finished the game with a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Shorebirds.
Luis Valdez singled and scored in both the first and eight innings for the Shorebirds while going 3-for-6 with two runs. Roberto Martinez also had three hits while going 3-for-5 with a RBI double in the third. Cristopher Cespedes scored three runs while going 2-for-3 with the go-ahead run in the third (scoring on a single from Noelberth Romero) and a run in the seventh and eighth innings. The Shorebirds also saw run-scoring hits from Steven Acevedo in the third, Frederick Bencosme in the eighth and Trendon Crain in the eighth as well.
Carolina will next enter a four-day All-Star before beginning a three-game series with the Down East Wood Ducks on Friday, July 22, at Five County Stadium.
