'Birds Head into All-Star Break After Earning Series Split against Mudcats

ZEBULON, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds pounded out 13 hits en route to a 10-4 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium

The Shorebirds (29-57, 8-13) earned a series split with a win, while the Mudcats (43-44, 9-12) head into the All-Star break failing to capture the series win over the Shorebirds.

Delmarva started the scoring straight away in the first inning. Luis Valdez legged out an infield single to start the game and then stole second. After a strikeout, Frederick Bencosme singled him home to make it 1-0 Delmarva.

The Shorebirds doubled their lead in the second. Delmarva loaded the bases with two away before Elio Prado was hit by a pitch to force in a run.

Carolina tied the game in the bottom of the second. Jesus Chirino swatted a solo homer, his fifth of the year, and Jheremy Vargas poked a two-run single to knot the score at 2-2.

Delmarva countered with three in the third to reclaim the lead. Cristopher Cespedes singled to start the frame before Trendon Craig walked. Noelberth Romero singled home Cespedes before Stiven Acevedo doubled home Craig. After a strikeout, Romero scored on a Michael Mantecon fielder's choice to make it 5-2.

Hedbert Perez cut it to a one-run deficit for the Mudcats with a two-run homer in the fifth, his 11th homer of the season.

Delmarva scored five unanswered down the stretch to pull away. Roberto Martinez swatted an RBI single in the seventh before the Shorebirds exploded for four in the eighth. Bencosme produced another RBI single before Prado scored on a wild pitch. Craig capped the scoring with a two-run single, moving the final line to 10-4.

Miguel Padilla (1-1) earned the win out of the bullpen for the Shorebirds, throwing two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk, striking out one.

Jeferson Figueroa (0-6) suffered the loss for Carolina, allowing five runs (four earned) over five innings on eight hits and three walks, striking out eight.

The Shorebirds now head into the All-Star Break and will resume playing on Friday, July 22 against the Fredericksburg Nationals at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
