Tacoma, WA - In front of a boisterous Wednesday night crowd of 6,481 at Cheney Stadium, the Tacoma Rainiers (40-54) dropped a 9-4 decision in 12 innings to the El Paso Chihuahuas (53-42), in a contest with far more drama than the final score would indicate. The Rainiers are 1-1 on this homestand.
El Paso took a 1-0 second inning lead, when Padres prospect shortstop Eguy Rosario - who leads the PCL in doubles - hit his 27th of the season to lead off, later scoring on a wild pitch.
Tacoma went in front 2-1 in the home third. Mason McCoy led the frame with his ninth homer of the season, which extended a hit streak to nine games, equaling a season-long. Mitch Haniger (MLB rehab) singled up the middle with two out, and scored all the way from first base when the Chihuahuas misplayed a pop-up in right field off the bat of Kevin Padlo, which officially dropped in for an RBI single.
It was 3-1 Rainiers in the fourth after a two-out rally; Forrest Wall singled and stole second (29 steals are third-most in PCL), and scored on McCoy's second RBI, a double off the bottom of the wall in left. El Paso tied it with a two-run homer a half-inning later in the fifth; 1B Wil Myers (MLB rehab) drilled the first homer of his Triple-A assignment to left-center, squaring the score 3-3.
Tacoma lefty Justus Sheffield pitched five full innings, allowing six hits and two walks. The three runs against him were earned, and he struck out three.
El Paso briefly broke the tie in the ninth with a two-out rally of their own. Taylor Kohlwey, the PCL's leading hitter (.331), knubbed a ground ball up the third base line that spun fair with two runners in scoring position, for a 4-3 visiting advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, Drew Ellis teed off on his fourth homer since joining the Rainiers, a solo shot to left to lead the half-inning and re-tie it 4-4. In extras however, after a pair of scoreless frames, the Chihuahuas awoke for a five-run 12th. Jose Azocar (3-run) and Kervin Pichardo (2-run) each homered; for Pichardo it was his first at Triple-A.
Wednesday was Tacoma's third 12-inning game of 2022; with the international tie-breaker rule in extra-innings (auto runner at second base), there has not yet been a 13-inning game in Triple-A this season.
The midpoint of this weeklong series will be on Thursday at Cheney Stadium. RHP Konner Wade is scheduled to start for Tacoma, against El Paso RHP Reiss Knehr. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. PT.
